Orbix/Smalltalk
Orbix is IONA Technologies' flagship product and a full and complete
implementation
of the Object Management Group's (OMG) Common Object Request Broker
Architecture
(CORBA). With Orbix, programmers can create and deploy distributed
applications using object-oriented technology, and use object technology
to compose new applications from existing components and subsystems.
Heterogeneous
platforms and programming languages integrate seamlessly as required.
The first version of Orbix was released in June 1993 and since then it has become the leading CORBA compliant Object Request Broker (ORB). It is used by the major software providers across the banking, communications, healthcare, engineering, petroleum and government sectors in addition to the general software market.
Orbix/Smalltalk is available for OS/2, Windows NT/95, and a range of UNIX
platforms, including AIX, Solaris and HP-UX, supporting Smalltalk, C++,
Ada95 and Java. Orbix/Smalltalk is available for VisualAge for
Smalltalk, and VisualWorks. Check the IONA Technologies'
home page
for availability of your configuration.
Orbix/Smalltalk provides CORBA 2.0-compliant connectivity through
the Smalltalk-based IDL compiler, an Interface Repository and an ORB run-time
system. Orbix/Smalltalk's built-in Interface and Implementation
repositories encapsulate shared objects that can use and provide services
with other objects on the network. Using Orbix/Smalltalk, you can
connect applications running on any CORBA 2.0-compliant ORB.
Smalltalk application developers can use Orbix/Smalltalk to develop and deliver distributed applications. Versions for both VisualAge for Smalltalk and VisualWorks are available.
The following "CORBA Services" are available, written natively in Smalltalk. Orbix/Smalltalk users may also use IONA Technologies' range of CORBA Services implemented in other languages:
