Visual Inheritance for VisualAge

Maximize Reuse of Parts

While non-visual inheritance is a basic feature of Smalltalk, visual inheritance heretofore has not been available. You can now create visual parts that will inherit full attributes and functionality from a parent part. This allows the developer to maximize the reuse of visual parts in the application development.

Changes in parent parts will be reflected in child parts, but changes can be made to child parts without reference to the parent.A push button together with functionality, may be inherited from a parent, but the absolute position of the button as well as its color could be different in the child.

Faster Development Cycle

This feature not only speeds up the development cycle but also reduces the size of the run-time image by leveraging code in the superclass as opposed to having the functionality represented in both subclass and superclass.

Screens with 90% commonality have previously required complete duplication of all parts, including the common parts. Now, with Visual Inheritance, only the non-common parts are generated for the new screen; the balance being inherited from the parent.

Visual Inheritance also allows non VisualAge Smalltalk classes to be used more effectively with VisualAge part development.

Visual Inheritance is an integral part of Business OS but is also available as a separate product. General availability for the Smalltalk platform is expected in the fourth quarter of 1996. Availability for the other platform is linked to the availability of the Business OS product.
