VASER - Software Development Framework for VisualAge for Smalltalk

Vaser is an application development framework based on the IBM Smalltalk environment VisualAge. To support rapid application development, a reusable class architecture as well as sophisticated tools are provided to dramatically reduce the entire development process.

Framework

• Layered software development model to separate application- and enterprise-specific functionality.
• Transaction concept to guaranty a consistent state between the user interface, enterprise object model, and an external data storage medium.
• Generic classes for the creation of database access, user interface, etc.
• Object Repository to maintain and manage the lifecycle of objects.
• Implementation of derived attributes and advanced signal handling.
• Definition of company specific standards (e.g. user interface, database, security, etc.).
• Standardized messages and error notification.
• Easy integration of legacy code.
• Runtime debugging tools.

Tools

• Database Link - Connects objects and classes to any external database allowing the developer to define structures as well as multi-user database access strategies. The user may automatically generate a database based on the definitions of the object model.
• Object Model Editor - Defines and modifies the Enterprise Object Model. New classes may be added which will be automatically converted into reusable parts.
• Help Editor - Documentation of classes and objects for continuous project documentation and automatic generation of help for the end user.
• Text Manager - Definition of text to allow for national language support at runtime. All text is retrieved from a file which may be easily adapted to different languages.
• Icon Manager - Management and assignment of available icons to interface elements.
• Extension of the VisualAge Parts Palette with advanced visual and nonvisual parts (e.g. status bar, tool bar, etc.).

Installation Requirements

Vaser is a framework extension to the IBM Smalltalk Development Environment VisualAge. It requires 5 MB of free disk space in addition to the VisualAge requirements. Vaser works with the OS/2 and Windows versions of VisualAge.
