SmartParts**SmartParts are tools which extend the power of VisualAge in many new and useful ways. Based on techniques developed originally for Artificial Intelligence, these tools are fully object-oriented and emphasize robustness and ease of use.
SmartReader is designed to extract data from text inputs. It can be read from both "structured" text, such as reports or files generated by a computer system, and many "semi-structured" texts such as land titles, or insurance claims. Designed for ease of use, it uses simple tables to define keywords, word sequences, field boundaries and transformation rules.
SmartGraph automatically draws hierarchical or network type diagrams for any VisualAge object that can provide the appropriate data. Graphs can span multiple pages, and interactive controls allow the user to set the style, scale, orientation, and colors, to add, delete, or position nodes, and to print the graph. Customizable attributes include background display, node appearance, graph layout and functions performed by user actions.
SmartDraw is a drawing package that produces scalable visual objects. Objects may be grouped together to form higher-level objects. Customized code can be defined for user interactions and objects may be defined as appearing in the foreground or background. SmartDraw-produced objects may be used for the nodes and background of SmartGraph.
SmartScript provides a customizable, friendly, end-user language. A dictionary associating application keywords with VisualAge code allows developers to provide an end-user scripting language with virtually no effort. Can interface to both SmartReader and SmartGraph.
SmartRules is an efficient expert system with advanced capabilities. Rules can be prioritized and can contain multiple conditions. The action part of rules may be written in either VisualAge or SmartScript code. Advanced tools are included for visualizing knowledge dependencies.
SmartParser is a parser generator designed to assist IT professionals in converting legacy software systems into Smalltalk classes and methods. The product includes a language specification and examples for transforming COBOL source code. Can be used with SmartRules for advanced capabilities.
