Component Manager is an advanced packaging tool for VisualAge for Smalltalk and IBM Smalltalk that uses an entirely new component technology that has many advantages over the traditional "stripping" approach. These are: less time needed for packaging, patches for Smalltalk, smaller run time images which use less memory. Component Manager includes three new technologies: automated packaging, components, and dynamic component loading and unloading in a run time image. The result is savings in developers' time and large reductions in workstation memory requirements.
Component Manager provides a complete set of browsers and tools to automatically calculate a core set of classes for a small "core image". The tools can then be used to build one or more component libraries which can be deployed and maintained by separate development teams. The core image is distributed to users and can be used to connect to any component library to execute an application. A core image can even connect to multiple component libraries and execute multiple applications from the same core image.
During run time, Component Manager will dynamically load components when needed and automatically remove components when they are not needed. This maintains a minimized memory "footprint" without the risks and trouble of image stripping. Patches can be placed in component libraries at any time. Users will immediately see the fix.
