IBM RS/6000 43P Model 120/133 Version 1.11 Firmware Update
==========================================================

The files in this archive will allow you to update the system firmware
in your IBM RS/6000 43P Model 120/133 Workstation to version 1.11. This
archive also includes an updated System Management Services (SMS)
diskette image that replaces any SMS with a version number lower than
1.07.

If your system already has version 1.11 or higher firmware, you do not
need this update. To determine the currently installed firmware
version, start the System Management Services on the 43P and read the
version from the header at the top of the main menu screen. It should
be in the form "version 1.xx" where xx is a 2-digit number.

Note: This archive is designed mainly for DOS, and DOS-compatible
operating systems such as OS/2 and Windows. It may be usable by other
operating systems as well. See the section on other operating systems
below. If you are using AIX to create the firmware update or SMS
diskettes, there should be another archive in the same location as this
one that is designed for AIX.

You should have the following files after unpacking the distribution
archive:

   README.txt - This file
   P93H4940.IMG - Firmware image file
   flash.6xe - Firmware update utility
english.6xe - Firmware update diskette utility
sms107.exe - Self-extracting ZIP file to create the SMS diskette
makefw.bat - DOS-mode batch file to make the firmware update disk
makesms.bat - DOS-mode batch file to make the SMS diskette
asciterm.txt - Describes how to use an ASCII Terminal

You will need as many as three blank DOS formatted diskettes (1.44 MB
formatted capacity).

======== STEP 1 - Create the Firmware Update Diskette ===========

This step creates a diskette which will be used in STEP 2 below.

Place a blank formatted diskette in the diskette drive of your
DOS-compatible workstation. Make sure the diskette write protect tab is
set to allow writing to the diskette. Enter the following at a DOS
command prompt. Under OS/2 or Windows, use a DOS-mode command prompt:

        makefw

Follow the instructions to create the Firmware Update diskette. If the
operation fails, see "Other Operating Systems" below.

Be sure to label the diskette as indicated by the makefw command. Set
the diskette write protect tab to allow reading only.

======  STEP 2 - Update Your System Firmware  ========

Follow these steps to update the firmware on your 43P system board. You
will need a blank, DOS formatted diskette, to hold the recovery image.
You will also need the Firmware Update diskette you created in STEP 1.

***** WARNING! *****
If power is lost during the firmware update procedure, the system
firmware could become corrupted. If this happens, the SYSTEM COULD BE
RENDERED INOPERABLE. To avoid this, follow the instructions in this
note and DO NOT POWER OFF THE SYSTEM DURING THE FIRMWARE UPDATE. Also,
take any steps to ensure that power is not interrupted during the update
procedure.
***** WARNING! *****

  1) Insert the Firmware Update diskette into the diskette drive of the
     43P-120/133 system to be updated.

  2) Power on the system.

  3) Press the F4 key after the first icon (keyboard) appears, and
before the last icon (audio) appears.

  4) If the F4 key was pressed in the right time frame, the firmware
update utility will display a small window asking if you wish to
continue with the update. If this does not happen, power-down your
     system and try again.

  5) When the firmware update begins, follow the on-screen instructions.
The utility will ask for a diskette on which to save a recovery
image of your existing firmware. Remove the Firmware Update
diskette, and insert the blank, formatted diskette at this point.

  6) After the recovery image is created, remove the diskette and label
it as the Recovery diskette. Reinsert the Firmware Update
diskette and the update procedure will continue.

  7) When the update is complete Remove the Firmware Update diskette.
You may power-down your system or press Enter to restart it.

======== STEP 3 - Create the SMS Diskette (optional) ===========

If the System Management Services (SMS) diskette with your 43P system is
lower than version 1.07, follow the instructions below to create an
updated SMS diskette.

To determine the version of your current SMS diskette, start the System
Management Services and select the "Vital Product Data" option from the
"Utilities" menu, then select "System Management Services Part Number".

To make a new SMS diskette, place a blank formatted diskette in the
diskette drive of your DOS-compatible workstation. Make sure the
diskette write protect tab is set to allow writing to the diskette.
From the directory where SMS107.EXE is located, enter the following at a
DOS command prompt. Under OS/2 or Windows, use a DOS-mode command
prompt:

        makesms d:

where d is the letter of the drive where SMS107.EXE is located.

Follow the instructions to create the SMS diskette. If the operation
fails, see "Other Operating Systems" below.

======  Other Operating Systems  ======

If the batch files do not work correctly on your system, or if you are
not running DOS, OS/2, or Windows, you can still create the diskettes
with the following procedures. Note that the diskettes *must* be
formatted and written with the DOS file system.

* To create the Firmware Update diskette, copy the following files to a
   blank, DOS formatted diskette:

        english.6xe
        flash.6xe
        P93H4940.IMG

Go to "Step 2", above, to update the firmware on a system.

* The SMS107.EXE file is a compressed ZIP archive. The file can be
executed on an Intel-based system running DOS, OS/2, or Windows by
typing the following from the directory where SMS107.EXE is located:

        makesms d:

where d is the drive letter where SMS107.EXE is located. If you
cannot execute the file directly, it can still be extracted with
PKZIP or Info-ZIP on many different platforms. You can then create
an SMS diskette by copying all the files from the SMS107.EXE archive
to a diskette. The files should be copied to the diskette in the
order in which they are stored in the archive. Note that some
operating systems will rearrange the files when they are unpacked.

In Case of Problems
===================

If the system will not boot, no video appears, but the diskette drive
light remains on or blinks rapidly, this suggests that the firmware has
been partially corrupted. If the system firmware is partially
corrupted the Recovery diskette can be used to correct it. See your
system publications for details on how to perform the recovery
  operation.

If the system will not boot, no video appears, and the diskette drive
light does not blink or remain lit, the system firmware may be
completely corrupted. In this case, call IBM at the phone numbers
given in your system publications for assistance.
