Date: September 30, 1992 Bulletin: B-920930-1 Subject: Loading the Solaris 1.0.1 SPARCbook Version B.0.2 Operating System Enclosed is a tape containing a release of the Solaris 1.0.1 SPARCbook Version B.0.2 operating system. This release includes support for the TFT display and 180MB disk drives, and supersedes the Solaris 1.0.1 SPARCbook Version B CD-ROM included with your system. It should be installed on a Sun workstation with the approximately 150MB of free disk space. After determining where it will be loaded, login as the root user and change to the load directory. The remaining instructions will assume that the load directory will be /export. Substitute your load directory name if different. The enclosed tape is in cpio format. Use the following command to load the software, cd /export ; cpio -ivmdBu < /dev/rst8 Once the software has been loaded onto the Sun, you may begin the installation procedure on the SPARCbook. This will destroy all existing files and completely replace the previously installed operating system release on the internal disk. Be sure to backup any files that you cannot otherwise replace. Before beginning, however, the SPARCbook must be connected to the Sun via ethernet, the SPARCbook's name, and name and internet address must be added to the Sun's /.rhosts, and /etc/hosts files respectfully, and the Sun's /etc/inetd.conf file must be modified to enable the non-secure tftp file transfer protocol. Other procedures may be necessary if you are using Sun's NIS. Refer to page 222 of the SPARCbook 1 User Guide, or contact your local system administrator or Tadpole Technology if you need assistance with any of these steps. To begin the loading procedure, turn the SPARCbook on and interrupt the fast diagnostics by pressing a key while they are running. The following menu will be displayed, 1> Continue with automatic system startup 2> Boot operating system or file 3> Standalone Restore 4> Enter system diagnostics Enter Choice> Enter 3 for standalone restore. The following menu will be displayed, SPARCbook Standalone Restore 1> Restore from Floppy Disk 2> Restore from Ethernet Enter Choice> Enter 2 to restore from ethernet. The following additional prompts will be displayed, Enter Network Address of machine where minifs resides, in numerical format (e.g. 192.9.200.52). The remote machine must be able to handle Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) requests. Server Network Address (default bootp)> SPARCbook Network Address (default bootp)> Enter File Name> Enter the internet address of the remote Sun in response to the first prompt, the internet address of the SPARCbook in response to the second prompt, and the full path name of the minifs file in response to the third prompt. Assuming the CD was mounted onto a directory named /export on the Sun, then the full path name of the minifs file would be /export/OS/stand/minifs. Substitute your directory name for /export if different. You will get a message on the display indicating that the minifs file is being transferred to the disk. Once it has been completely transferred, the following menu will be displayed, Default boot file is hard disk (drive 0, partition 0) : vmunix 1> Boot Default File 2> Boot Alternate File 3> Change Default File Enter Choice> Enter 2 to boot an alternate file. The following menu will be displayed, New Source for boot file : 1> Hard Disk 2> Floppy 3> Ethernet Enter Choice> Enter 1 to boot from hard disk. The following prompt will be displayed, Please enter the file specification in the form `[drive] [part] filename' The following are optional numerical arguments : [drive] - hard disk drive to be accessed (default 0) [part] - partition containing the filesystem (default 0) If only one number is specified then it is assumed to be a drive specifier Enter File Specification> Enter the following file specification, 0 1 vmunix The just installed minifs operating system will begin to boot. The following menu will be displayed upon completion, Entering Networked Restore. To abort press CTRL-C SPARCbook Standalone Restore Select restore from floppy disk (1) restore from ethernet (2) restore from SCSI-CD (3) restore from SCSI-Tape (4) Choice> Enter 2 to restore from ethernet. The following prompts will be displayed, Enter remote machine name []: Enter remote machine network address (e.g. 192.9.200.2): Enter SPARCbook machine name [sparcbook]: Enter SPARCbook network address (e.g. 192.9.200.1): Enter remote device or mount-point [/dev/nrst8]: Enter the name and internet address of the Sun in response to the first and second prompts, the name and internet address of the SPARCbook in response to the third and fourth prompts, and the full path name of the mount point in response to the fifth prompt. Assuming the CD was mounted onto a directory named /export on the Sun, then the full path name of the mount-point would be /export. The following prompt will be displayed, Is all of the above information correct (y/n) [n] : Enter y to the prompt if you are satisfied that your responses to the previous prompts. If you enter n, then all of the previous responses will be redisplayed. After entering y, then the following prompt will be displayed, !! WARNING !! This will create a new filesystem on your second disk, and all existing files will be destroyed. If you enter n, then the second disk will not be touched, nor will it be automatically mounted upon a reboot. You will need to manually edit your /etc/fstab file to mount any file systems that may exist on the drive. Next you will need to choose one of three load options for the Solaris 1.0.1 SPARCbook Version B.0.2 operating system. The load options are described in the release notes. The following menu will be displayed with the three options., Select option to load (1) Solaris-1.0.1-SPARCbook-RevB-Factory (2) Solaris-1.0.1-SPARCbook-RevB-Factory (3) Solaris-1.0.1-SPARCbook-RevB-Factory Choice> Enter the number corresponding to the option you have selected. The Solaris 1.0.1 SPARCbook Version B.0.2 operating system will now be loaded onto your boot disk. Each operating system file will be displayed on the screen as it is read and created. After the operating system has been loaded, then the following prompt will be displayed, Press ENTER to reboot: The procedure of loading Solaris 1.0.1 SPARCbook Version B.0.2 operating system is now complete.
