Walter Roberson roberson@ibd.nrc.ca From: annee@milamber.csd.sgi.com (Anne Eagle) Newsgroups: comp.sys.sgi.admin,comp.sys.sgi.announce Subject: Permanent Desks Overview License Sources Date: 12 Mar 1995 21:43:00 -0600 Silicon Graphics is happy to announce that the "Desks Overview" dispute has been successfully resolved. All users of this feature will be provided with a free permanent license. The licensing code will be removed from future releases of the desktop software. The permanent license should be installed on systems running IRIX 5.3, 6.0 or 6.0.1. For your convenience, the license and installation instructions are included in this message. The license and installation instructions are also currently available from the following sources: ---------- Newsgroups ---------- A message containing the license and installation instructions was posted on March 8 to: comp.sys.sgi.admin and comp.sys.sgi.announce ------------- Email address ------------- Send email (no subject or message body necessary) to: deskinfo@sgi.com Email received at this address will automatically be replied to with a message containing the license and installation instructions. Note: Due to the number of requests that may be made to this email address, we cannot guarantee any attempt to resolve bounced email messages. If you do not receive a reply within a "reasonable" amount of time for your mailer system, please either retry sending your mail, try another source for the license or contact your support provider. ---------- Fax Number ---------- Beginning Wednesday March 15, sending a fax to: 415-390-6323 will result in an attempt to automatically send a fax containing the license and installation instructions to the originating fax machine. Important: The machine sending the fax normally includes it's fax number as part of the handshake to set up the fax connection. If your system does not include this number, we will not be able to send you the reply fax. Due to the number of requests that may be made to this fax number, we cannot guarantee any attempt to resolve bounced faxes. If you do not receive a reply within a "reasonable" amount of time for your fax system, please either retry sending your fax, try another source for the license or contact your support provider. ------------ Silicon Surf ------------ The license and installation instructions are on the Silicon Surf page: http://www.sgi.com/Misc/license.html The license can also be accessed both from the "What's New" page: http://www.sgi.com/Misc/whats-new.html and the "Indigo Magic User Environment" page: http://www.sgi.com/Products/Indy/Indy_Prod_Guide7.html ------------------------ License and Instructions ------------------------ Note: Help on using jot is available from the jot menu. You can use jot or any other ascii text editor. To install the permanent license: 1) Log in as root 2) Open the folder called /var/netls 3) Double click the icon called nodelock 4) Identify the line that contains the word "Desks" 5) Delete that line 6) Insert the following two lines in its place. (The simplest way to do this is to copy these two lines and paste them in the editor window.) #:# "Silicon Graphics" Desks A "2038/01/01" 546fb4684914.02.c0.1a.3d.52.00.00.00 y49ga6qrewn69tqaq4r6m44g22 6) Save the file by choosing the Save menu item from the File menu. 7) Close the desks overview, and restart it from the Desktop entry in the toolchest. Executing these instructions will provide you with a "permanent" license for the Desks Overview feature. When you next start the Desks Overview, you should not see a notifier telling you that your license is due to expire. Thank you for your patience in this matter.
