The Unix porting project is a way for you to actively contribute to RISC OS by having a say in what programs you want to see, and getting support, development and automated upgrades of those programs. |

The basic idea is this - you pay an all-inclusive subscription fee, and with that you get support for all the programs available from this project. You also get to make suggestions and comments on what programs you'd like to see converted (or "ported") to RISC OS. Of course, not all suggestions may be sensible but you will be listened to and your comments noted.
Some people may never require support, and some people will never want to make suggestions - that's fine too - in this case, your subscription shows your appreciation of developments to RISC OS.
This project is not specifically aimed at programmers, nor advanced RISC OS users, but rather everyone who would like to see new software.
The diagram on the right shows the interaction of some types of programs with Unix and RISC OS after conversion. This is not comprehensive, but is intended to give a functional view of the process that I take programs through as part of this project.
This highlights some important issues:
The cost for a regular subscription is 25UKP (or close foreign equivalent) per person for 6 months. To keep things simple, this is a one-size-fits all cost. This gets you email-based support for one person for all the programs on this site over as many computers as you like. Group discounts are available.
The full list of prices is as follows:
Some people who have or will contribute significantly to this project will receive free subscriptions, and even some payment.

The current programs available are listed on the downloads page along with descriptions. Programs are added and updated regularly (many are updated automatically), based upon programs that subscribers suggest or my own choices. There are other programs too that are being looked at, but these are in various states of development, and are not listed until they are actually downloadable. I cannot convert all programs, for technical or practical reasons, but I am quite happy to discuss the reasons why. |

The project supports operation of the programs on all released versions of RISC OS from 3.5 to Select, although it is generally recommended you have at least RISC OS 4. Programs may work on RISC OS 3.1, but this is entirely at your own risk and no support can be offered regarding operation of programs under it. You will also require an up-to-date boot sequence. It is also plausible in future that some programs will only work on RISC OS Select or on RISC OS 5, depending upon the program.
All programs are 32-bit compatible.
All programs are downloadable from this website. However, many programs are sizable, and may take too long to download over modem. For this reason, CDs are available containing the entire site and some extra programs. See the CD page for more information.
For prices and subscriptions, see the Subscription Page
All support is via email, except occasionally by special request via online chat. I cannot offer phone support of any type. Although I try to answer emails as quickly as possible, this may not always be possible for technical reasons, or they may be a delay if I have to research the issue.
As you might expect, I cannot offer any support to non-subscribers except to answer questions about the project itself, and functionality about the programs in the project. For the time being, I do not believe there is any particular reason for a mailing list.
You should also understand that not all questions have clear answers, and some none at all which I am able to discover.
All queries about all aspects of this project should be sent to unix@chocky.org. Do not use any other email address.
This page shows some of the programs in action.
For those interested in support for development and tools for their own porting, see the developer page.
