GFU is freeware - it can be copied or given away freely so
long as it is accompanied by this text file (GFU.TXT) and
is not modified in any way. The main reason I wrote this
program is that it allows PD libraries or other interested
parties to distribute GEM fonts in compressed format (GFU
can be included with any PD or commercial collection of
fonts). The other reason is that it serves as an advert
   for Fontkit Plus and Trimfont.

Fontkit Plus is a sophisticated GEM-font editor which can
read and write compressed GEM fonts, and can also edit
Signum fonts, ST screen fonts, and downloadable printer
fonts. It contains a full set of drawing tools, with
global effects, and import options for converting Calamus,
HP, and Macintosh fonts into GEM fonts (it can also read
and write GEM/3 fonts used on PC computers).

Trimfont is a GEM-font manager which can compress or
uncompress batches of GEM fonts, and can also remove
unwanted (e.g. foreign) characters, and list or change ID
numbers (useful for writing assign.sys files). Trimfont
is accompanied by Fontxpander, a memory-resident program
which allows compressed fonts to be used with standard
GDOS programs (they are automatically uncompressed when
they are loaded). This is a useful way of saving space
on a hard disk or using more fonts with floppy disks and
   ram disks.

Trimfont and Fontxpander are included with Fontkit Plus
3.4, and they are also available as a separate package.

GFU is straightforward to use. Copy the fonts you wish to
uncompress onto a working disk with plenty of free space
(compressed fonts are normally less than half the size of
uncompressed fonts; large fonts may be less than one tenth
the size of uncompressed fonts). Then click on the button
labelled 'uncompressed' and use the GEM file selector to
select the directory containing the compressed fonts,
leaving the filename blank. GFU will then uncompress
compressed fonts in this directory (overwriting the
original compressed fonts). You can also use the GEM file
selector to select a single compressed font which GFU will
   uncompress.

GFU can be used to uncompress fonts in the compressed
format introduced with Fontkit Plus 3.2 as well as fonts
in the more efficient compressed format introduced with
   Fontkit Plus 3.4.
