Installing and Running File Alert
__________________________________

This README.TXT file is in a directory with the files for the Intel based
PC version of File Alert for Windows NT. Other versions of File Alert are
available for the Alpha AXP PC and MIPS PC platforms.

1. Follow these steps to install File Alert:

    * Run the SETUP.EXE program from the directory which contains this
      README.TXT file.

    * Change the destination directories if needed, and click on the
"Install" button to do the installation. The filenames of the files
being copied are displayed and a program group is created with icons
for "File Alert", "Corrupt", and "Read Me".

2. Click on the "File Alert" icon to start File Alert.

Seeing File Alert in Action
___________________________

This Win32 Sampler CD version of File Alert includes a utility that can be
used to intentionally cause file corruption. THIS UTILITY WILL ONLY WORK
WITH THE FILE NAMED "CORRUPT.TST", which is included on the distribution
media. The corruption created by this utility will not harm the disk volume
or any other files on it.

To use this utility, follow these steps:

1.	Use the File Alert "Run options" item from the "Options" menu and
select the "Display status bar" option. In addition, select
the "Log start of new disk" option.

2.	Press the File Alert "Begin" button and observe at least one
complete pass through all of the files on the disk. This
establishes the baseline from which File Alert will detect changes
	that indicate corruption.

3.	Press the File Alert "Suspend" button.

4.	Click on the "Corrupt" icon to start the file corruption utility.

5.	Press the "Load File" button, then select the CORRUPT.TST file.
Click on "OK" to confirm your selection.

6.	Click on the "Corrupt" button.

7.	Return to File Alert and click on the "Resume" button.

File Alert will scan until it detects the corrupted file and will then
pop-up the corruption message, log an entry in the Windows NT application
log, and otherwise make the advertised functions of File Alert demonstrably
visible.

You may optionally restrict the area of the disk being scanned by excluding
specific drives, directories or files from the File Alert scan process.
This reduces the amount of time necessary for File Alert to locate the
corrupt file.
