Preface

This document provides quick installation instructions for the
beta release of PC-NFS for the Microsoft Windows NT Operating
System software (hereafter referred to as PC-NFS). PC-NFS
software lets you connect to and work with network-based NFS
files and directories as if they resided locally on your
   Windows NT-based PC.

The topics covered in this document are as follows:

     - System requirements
     - Checking your network adapter
     - Making backup copies
     - Installing PC-NFS software
     - Using an authentication server
     - How to proceed

Use this document as a starting point for working with PC-NFS
   software.

After you have installed the software, refer to the provided
help file, named NTNFS.HLP in your PC-NFS program directory
(\NTNFS by default), for complete operating instructions.

NOTE: You can view the PC-NFS help file without actually
starting PC-NFS. To view the file, press F1 in any Windows NT
window, and then choose the Open command from the Help File
menu. In the File Open dialog, type in the name of the PC-NFS
program directory and help file (or use the File Open Browse
feature to point-and-click on the path and name), and then
   press OK.

PC-NFS Installation Instructions

The remainder of this document describes how to install PC-NFS
for the Microsoft Windows NT Operating System software on your
   PC.

System Requirements

Before attempting to install or run PC-NFS software, verify
that the computer on which you want to use the software is
   configured as follows:

     - IBM/PC-compatible with an Intel 80386-compatible or better
       processor
     - At least 12 megabytes of random access memory (RAM)
     - A hard disk with at least 2.5 megabytes of free disk space
     - A Windows NT-compatible network adapter
     - A mouse (recommended but not required)
     - Microsoft Windows NT 3.1 or later software
     - Windows NT-compatible TCP/IP software

NOTE: Appropriate TCP/IP software is included with your Windows
NT software package; this software, however, is not installed
by default with Windows NT (that is, through the Express
setup). Be sure to install and start the TCP/IP software before
   installing PC-NFS.

Checking Your Network Adapter

PC-NFS software can work with any network adapter that is
supported by Windows NT. Such adapters include Ethernet,
TokenRing, or other Network Driver Interface Standard (NDIS)
boards. The network adapter you use must be properly installed
and configured for your computer before installing PC-NFS
   software.

NOTE: A handy way to test your network board and TCP/IP
software configuration is to ping a remote workstation to which
   you want to connect.

Refer to your Windows NT documentation for a list of compatible
network adapters. Refer to the documentation included with your
network adapter for installation and configuration
   instructions.

Making Backup Copies

It is recommended that you make backup copies of the PC-NFS
distribution disks before proceeding. After making backup
copies, store the originals in a safe place and use the backups
for the remainder of this installation.

To make backup copies, use the Copy Disk command from the
Windows NT File Manager Disk menu. Refer to your Windows NT
documentation for more information about the Copy Disk command.

Installing PC-NFS Software

   To install PC-NFS software:

     1. Start your PC with the Windows NT operating system.

     2. Verify that a TCP/IP software package is running on
        your PC.

Use the Windows NT Control Panel Services application to
        view the current status of your TCP/IP software package;
activate the package if necessary. Refer to your Windows
NT documentation for more information about the Services
        application.

     3. Insert the PC-NFS installation diskette in the floppy
        drive on your PC.

     4. Choose the Run command from the Windows NT File Manager or
        Program Manager File menu.

The File Run dialog box is displayed.

     5. Enter the following command in the File Run dialog:

          a:setup

If the PC-NFS program diskette is your b: drive, enter
b:setup instead. The installation startup screen is
        displayed.

     6. Press the Continue button.

The PC-NFS registration screen is displayed.

     7. Enter your User Name and Company Name, and then press
        Continue.

User Name is required, and can be up to 64 alphanumeric
characters; Company Name is optional. Serial Number is not
required for this beta version of PC-NFS software. After
pressing Continue, the Select Destination screen is
        displayed.

     8. Specify the directory in which you want to install PC-NFS
        software, and then press Continue.

The default directory is \NTNFS; you can accept this
directory or enter one of your choosing. After pressing
Continue, the setup program copies the PC-NFS program
files to the specified directory. After all files are
copied, the setup program informs you that the
        installation is complete.

     9. Reboot your system.

For this beta release, it is necessary to reboot your
system before starting PC-NFS for the first time after
        installation.

Using an Authentication Server

In most cases, before using PC-NFS software, it is desirable to
start the pcnfsd daemon on any NFS-based server to which you
will want to connect. The pcnfsd daemon provides user login and
authentication services, and makes it possible for an NFS
server to verify user account information and privileges.
Without the pcnfsd daemon, users can only log in as the generic
nobody, which on most networks provides little access to
network files and directories. Ask your network administrator
   about the pcnfsd daemon.

Use the NFS PCNFSD command to specify the authentication server
you want to use. Use the NFS LOGIN command to log in to an NFS
server. Refer to the on-line help file for more information
   about these commands.

How To Proceed

PC-NFS software comprises three primary modules:

     - The NFS.EXE command line program
     - Remote file services that are integrated with the Windows
       NT File Manager
     - A Control Panel application that allows you to customize
       PC-NFS software

You can, at this point, use any of these modules. Brief
instructions for getting started with the three PC-NFS modules
   are provided below.

To use the NFS.EXE command line program:

     1. Double-click on the DOS Prompt icon in the Windows NT
        Program Manager Main group.

The Windows NT DOS box is displayed. Alternatively, you
can choose the Run command from the File menu in the
Windows NT Program Manager or File Manager.

     2. Enter the NFS.EXE command you wish to use.

For example, two good choices at this time might be:

          nfs pcnfsd servername
          nfs login *

Complete information about using the NFS.EXE program is
provided in the NFS.EXE sections of the PC-NFS help file.

To use PC-NFS software through the Windows NT File Manager:

     1. Open the Windows NT File Manager.

     2. Choose the Connect Network Drive command from the File
        Manager Disk menu.

     3. Mount (connect to) the NFS drive(s) to which you want to
        gain access.

Mounted drives are displayed as drive icons across the top
of the current File Manager Drive window. For example, H:
could represent your NFS-based home directory.

Complete information about using PC-NFS software through the
Windows NT File Manager is provided in the File Manager
sections of the PC-NFS help file.

To use the PC-NFS Control Panel application:

     1. Double-click on the Control Panel icon in the Windows NT
        Program Manager Main group.

The Windows NT Control Panel window is displayed.

     2. Double-click on the PC-NFS Config icon in the Control
        Panel window.

The PC-NFS configuration application main window is
        displayed.

Complete information about using the PC-NFS Control Panel
application is provided in the Control Panel sections of the
   PC-NFS help file.
