Installing the Microsoft Sampler Edition of uniVerse

1) Installing TCP/IP
TCP/IP must be installed and the Telnet service started before uniVerse is
installed. To install TCP/IP, load the Windows NT installation CD in the CD drive, and in
Program Manager's Main program group choose Control Panel. From the Control Panel
choose Network. In the network dialog box, click on the Add Software button. From the
scrollable list, choose TCP/IP Protocol. Enter an IP address for your machine and make
sure the mask is 255 255 255 0. Write down your IP address and use it in Step 6, "Setting
up the Hosts File," below.

2) Starting the Telnet Service
From the Control Panel, chooose Services. From the list of services, choose
Telnet. Click on the Start button and wait for the service to start.

3a) Installing the uniVerse Server -- Intel
From the File menu of Program Manager, choose Run. Click on the browse
button, and navigate the directory structure to the path on this Sampler CD for uniVerse
setup (\VMark\Intel\setup.exe).
In the setup program, choose a location to install the uniVerse file system. Note:
uniVerse must be installed on an NTFS partition. (uniVerse file names are too long to
install on a FAT partition.)

3b) Installing the uniVerse Server -- Mips or DEC Alpha AXP
From the File menu of Program Manager, choose Run. Click on the browse
button, and navigate the directory structure to the path on this Sampler CD for uniVerse
setup ( \VMark\MIPS\UVsetup.exe, or \VMark\Alpha\UVsetup.exe).
At the end of the command line, type in the drive designator for the drive where
you want to install the uniVerse file system. This must be in the form of a single letter
followed by a colon (for example, c:). (If you do not type in the drive designator,
UVsetup will prompt you for it.) Note: uniVerse must be installed on an NTFS
partition. (uniVerse file names are too long to install on a FAT partition.)
UVsetup will create a console window which gives no indication that the setup
process is making progress. This is a temporary version of installation software pending
fixes to the full graphical user interface version of Setup for Mips and Alpha.

4) Starting the uniVerse Service
From the Control Panel, choose Services. From the list of services, choose
uniVerse. Click on the Start button and wait for the service to start.

5) Using Terminal
From the Accessories program group, launch Terminal. From the Settings menu,
choose Communications. In the Connector box, choose Telnet. In the Flow Control box
click None.
From the Settings menu, choose Terminal Preferences. In the Columns box, click
the 132 button.
Save these settings to avoid having to repeat these steps.
(Also included with this sampler edition is a demonstration copy of VMark's
NewLook terminal emulator. If you desire, you may use this terminal emulator instead of
the Terminal applet that ships with Microsoft Windows NT. You can run Setup to install
the NewLook terminal emulator and launch the NewLook application. From NewLook's
Communication menu item, choose Network.)

6) Setting up the Hosts File
Using a text editor such as Notepad, edit \<WINNT>\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
(where <WINNT> is the directory where you installed Windows NT. Following the
example you will find in that file, type in a name for your host, followed by the IP address
you created in step 1.
Setting up the Hosts file is optional. If you wish to skip this step, you may
substitute your IP address for the Host name mentioned below in step 7.

7) Attaching to the uniVerse Server from Terminal
At the Telnet prompt in Terminal, type "open <hostname>", where <hostname> is
the name you specified in the Hosts file. (Optionally, you may replace <hostname> with
your IP address.) Note: the telnet command open must be entered in lower case.
As soon as you open your host, the uniVerse server will greet you and prompt
you.
At the Username prompt, enter a valid username on the Windows NT system on
which the uniVerse server is running. This is the same username that you would type in at
the Control-Alt-Delete prompt to log in to Windows NT (for example, "Administrator").
At the Password prompt, enter the password for that user. (Note that the
password is case-sensitive.)
At the Account prompt, enter <drive letter>:\uv\accounts\demo.

8) Viewing the demonstration files
The login paragraph for the demo account will present a menu of uniVerse vertical
market applications grouped by categories. Use this menu to choose from over 200
business applications available in uniVerse, or exit to the command line to explore
uniVerse on your own.
