PREPARING FOR INSTALLATION

Make sure your computer meets the hardware and software requirements
outlined below. XoftWare/32 for Windows NT files are in a compressed format.
As a result, they can be accessed only through the XoftWare/32 for Windows NT
installation procedure.

If a previous version of XoftWare/32 is loaded on your computer, you should
delete the root XoftWare/32 directory (usually C:\XOFTWARE) before beginning
this installation. (Before doing so, you may wish to save your .DAT files by
copying them from the root XoftWare/32 directory to another directory or to a
diskette for later retrieval.)

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

To run XoftWare/32 for Windows NT, your computer configuration must include
the following hardware:
- An 80386 (25MHz or greater) or 80486 IBM PC-AT; a Pentium-based PC or
compatible computer;
- At least 12 megabytes of extended RAM. (A minimum of 16 megabytes of RAM
is recommended.)
- At least 6 megabytes of hard disk capacity to store XoftWare/32 for Windows
NT program and basic font files, and to provide reserve capacity for log files.
- A Microsoft Windows NT-compatible display.
- A Microsoft Windows NT-compatible mouse.
- A Microsoft Windows NT network interface board supporting Microsoft
Windows NT TCP/IP services.

SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

XoftWare/32 for Windows NT also requires the following software to be installed
on your system:
- Microsoft Windows NT release 3.1.
- Microsoft Windows NT TCP/IP network software loaded

XoftWare/32 for Windows NT and the XoftWare/32 installation program run
under Microsoft Windows NT.

PRELIMINARY INFORMATION

Before you proceed determine:
- the free space on your hard disk drive (minimum of 6 megabytes).
- the type of X fonts you wish to install. A set of fixed-width fonts is automatically
installed. Two additional sets of fonts, one at 75 dots per inch (dpi) and the other
at 100 dpi, are initially selected for installation. You may choose not to include
one or both of these sets because your display will not support them or because
your disk space is limited. A set of Large (16-bit) fonts, which includes Asian
language characters, is also available.

- Make sure the Microsoft Windows NT TCP/IP network transport is loaded and
operational.

INSTALLING XOFTWARE/32 FOR WINDOWS NT

Start Microsoft Windows NT and select Run from the Program Managers File
menu. At the Command Line, type:

D: (or E:)\AGE\SETUP

Choose the letter of the drive (D, E, etc) which represents your CD drive. Note
that this and all commands may be typed in either upper or lower case and must
be concluded by pressing the ENTER key.

After you have finished the setup and confirmed your installation configuration,
the installation program will proceed to begin actual copying and installation of
all required XoftWare/32 for Windows NT files.

INSTALLATION SETUP

1. You will first be presented with a dialog box to specify the installation
directory. Enter the directory into which XoftWare/32 for Windows NT will be
installed. The default installation directory is C:\XOFTWARE. You may specify a
different installation directory if you wish. (If you do so, keep in mind that you
should use your installation directory pathname in place of C:\XOFTWARE
wherever it appears in these instructions.

Continue the installation by clicking the OK button. Click the Cancel button to
exit the installation and return to Microsoft Windows NT. If the installation
directory you specified does not exist, you will be asked if you wish to create it. If
you choose No, you will once again be asked to enter the installation directory.

If the installation directory you specified does not exist, you will be asked if you
wish to create it. If you choose No, you will once again be asked to enter the
installation directory.

2. You will now be given the option to add font families through the dialog box.
An adequate set of fonts is automatically installed in the \FONTS\MISC
subdirectory within the installation directory you specified earlier (usually
C:\XOFTWARE). However, if your display type supports it, it is recommended
that you add a larger selection of fonts, such as the 75 DPI or 100 DPI font set.
Each set occupies approximately 3 megabytes of disk space. A set of Large
fonts, which includes Asian language characters, is also available; this set
requires approximately 4 megabytes of disk space.

To add fonts, select the fonts you want to install from the Available Fonts list and
click Add. (You will be alerted if you attempt to add a font set for which you do
not have enough hard drive space.) To remove fonts, select the ones you wish
to remove from the Selected Fonts list and click Remove. Confirm your choices
by clicking OK.
If you do not wish to add or remove any fonts, you can click OK immediately and
proceed to the next step.

3. The next dialog box allows you to add XoftWare/32 for Windows NT utilities:

You should always install Help Files to allow access to XoftWare/32s extensive
on-line documentation. Most users will also want to install XoftWare/32s Font
Manager utility, which allows you to convert and install custom fonts or delete
fonts without the need to reconfigure your system.

To add these utilities, click once on Help Files and Font Manager in the
Available Utilities window and click Add. (You will be alerted if you do not have
enough hard drive space to accommodate your choices.) If you have clicked
Add but then decide to remove either utility, select it from the Selected Utilities
list and click Remove. Confirm your choices by clicking OK.

4. A summary of the default installation setup will appear. This summary
indicates that two sets of X fonts (at 75 and 100 dots per inch) and two
XoftWare/32 utilities (Font Manager and Help Files) have been selected by
default for installation. You should now select one of the following options:

- Click OK to accept the installation configuration. This completes the
installation setup and begins actual file installation. OR:
- Click Change to modify your configuration settings. This will cause the Custom
Setup dialog box to appear, allowing you to add or delete fonts or utilities. Follow
the instructions under "Reconfiguration" (below).
- Click Exit to cancel the installation and return to Microsoft Windows NT.
- Click Help to access on-line documentation.

RECONFIGURATION

Reconfiguration is for users who wish to change or reconfigure their
XoftWare/32 for Windows NT setup. You can access the reconfiguration menu
in two ways:

1. Select Change from the Configuration Summary dialog box during
installation.
2. Double-click the Reconfigure icon in the XoftWare/32 for Windows NT
program group:
This will launch the Reconfigure program. This program will also launch if you
attempt a new installation after having previously installed the current release of
XoftWare/32 for Windows NT.

After the Reconfigure program is loaded, the Configuration Summary will
appear. Review your current configuration and select Change.

The same Custom Setup menu will appear in either case. This menu allows you
to add or remove fonts and utilities directly. Select only the configuration group
(fonts or utilities) you are interested in amending, as described below.

ADDING OR REMOVING FONTS

Click the Fonts button from the Custom Setup dialog box to add or remove font
families through the Font Selection dialog box:

An adequate set of X fonts (not shown in the Font Selection dialog box) is
automatically installed in the \FONTS\MISC subdirectory within your installation
directory.

Two additional X font sets are automatically chosen for initial installation, one at
75 dots per inch (dpi) and one at 100 dpi. These font sets allow you a greater
variety of fonts and are recommended for all displays that support them (see
page 5-2 for details). Each set occupies approximately 3 megabytes of disk
space.

In addition, a set of Large fonts, which includes Asian language characters, is
also available; this set requires approximately 4 megabytes of disk space.

To add fonts, select a font set from the Available Fonts list and click Install. (You
will be alerted if you attempt to add a font set for which you do not have enough
hard drive space.) To remove fonts, select a font set from the Installed Fonts list
and click Remove. Confirm your choices by clicking OK.

ADDING OR REMOVING UTILITIES

Click the Utilities button from the Custom Setup dialog box to add or remove
utilities through the Utility Selection dialog box. All utilities are automatically
chosen for initial installation. If disk space on your computer is at a premium, you
may elect to remove some of the utilities. However, you should always keep the
Help files to allow access to XoftWare/32s extensive on-line documentation.

Most users will also want to keep XoftWare/32s other special utilities. Font
Manager allows you to convert and install custom fonts or delete fonts without
reconfiguring your system. To add utilities, select the utilities from the Available
Utilities window and click Install. (You will be alerted if you attempt to add a utility
for which you do not have enough hard drive space.) To remove utilities, select
the utilities from the Installed Utilities list and click Remove. Confirm your
choices by clicking OK.

END RECONFIGURATION

When you are finished customizing your configuration, click Close from the
Custom Setup menu to verify your settings in the Configuration Summary. You
may then proceed to the "File Copying and Installation" section, which follows.

FILE COPYING AND INSTALLATION

Choosing OK in the Configuration Summary completes the installation setup and
begins the process of actually copying XoftWare/32 files from the distribution CD
to your PCs hard drive.

DISPLAY MESSAGES

A variety of messages will appear on your screen to keep you informed of the
state of your PC and the progress of the installation.

At the left of the display, three vertical bar graphs appear. The left graph
represents the space left on your hard drive. (A low disk space warning will be
activated if space on the hard drive begins to get low). The middle graph
approximates how much random access memory (RAM) is being used. The right
graph shows the decompression and copying progress of the individual
XoftWare/32 for Windows NT files as they are installed.

In the center of the display, a horizontal bar graph provides you with a
continuous report on overall installation progress. Each filename is displayed as
the file is decompressed and installed on your hard drive. Messages will also
appear in this area to alert you when to install the next installation diskette into
the disk drive.

At the lower right of the display, an Exit icon remains visible throughout the
installation process. Click on this icon at any time to abort the installation and
return to Microsoft Windows NT. This action may not be instantaneous, because
the current file decompression must be completed before the exit can take
effect.

INSTALLATION COMPLETE

When the installation is completed, you will be returned to the Microsoft
Windows NT Program Manager. Notice that the XoftWare/32 for Windows NT
icon is now included in the new XoftWare/32 for Windows NT program group on
your Microsoft Windows NT desktop. This group also includes the Reconfigure
icon, the Help icon for on-line documentation, the About icon for a quick preview
of XoftWare/32, and icons of any utilities you installed.
