The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a,
   2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c
 - Microsoft Windows operating system versions 3.0 and 3.1

Summary:

In Word for Windows, if you use the SET field to define a bookmark
containing a table or a linked graphic, the resulting bookmark will
display the text surrounding the graphic or table, but will not
display the table or linked graphic.

More Information

This problem will occur when you insert a table or linked graphic
directly in the SET field, as well as when you try to use an INCLUDE
field in a SET field.

In the following example, any reference to the bookmark "test" will
have no result:

   {set test {import graphic.wmf}}

The {set test {include file.doc}} field sets the bookmark "test" to
the contents of FILE.DOC; however, any tables or linked graphics will
not display in the result.

Workarounds
-----------

 - When you use the SET field to define a bookmark containing a
graphic, insert the graphic without the Link option so that the
graphic is not the result of a field code. Embedded graphics will
also display correctly as the result of a SET field.

-or-

 - To be able to reference information containing a table or graphic
using a field, use the GLOSSARY field to display the desired result
   as follows:

   1. Select the desired information containing the table or linked
      graphic.

   2. From the Edit menu, choose Glossary.

   3. Type a glossary name and then choose Define. Since the
information is now stored in the glossary item, the source
information is no longer necessary and you can delete it.

   4. To view the result of the glossary, insert the GLOSSARY field as
      follows

         {glossary glossaryname}

where the field brackets are inserted by pressing CTRL+F9 and
glossaryname is the name of the new glossary created.

   5. To display the glossary result, press F9 to update the result.
Verify that Field Codes is not selected on the View menu.

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
