SUMMARY
=======

If you use one of the letter templates supplied with Word for Windows
(LETBLOCK.DOT, LETMDSEM.DOT, LETMODBK.DOT, or LETPERSN.DOT) and you
type a string that begins with "print" in the Full Name, Position, or
Company boxes, the template inserts a PRINT field into the letter. The
PRINT field causes the letter to print incorrectly as garbled
characters.

MORE INFORMATION
================

For more information on the PRINT field, search for "print field"
using the Help menu.

The letter templates parse the Name, Address, Position, and Company
data and place it in individual field codes in your letter after the
ZIP Code of the address block. The following example demonstrates this
process:

   {createdate \@ "MMMM d, yyyy"}
   Mr. John Doe
   Print Specialist
   Print Solutions
   14 Main Street
   Seattle, WA 98101{\Mr.}{\John}{\Doe}{\Print Specialist}{\Print
   Solutions}{\206-555-5555}

   Dear John:{\3}

In the above example, the template places the Position and Company
data in fields, where Word interprets them as PRINT fields. Because
the data are not valid printer codes, the printer generates garbled
output.

WORKAROUND
==========

1. Turn on field code view. To do this, be sure the Field Codes
   command on the View menu has a check mark so that all fields show
   their results (if this command does not have a check mark, choose
   Field Codes to switch to field code view).

2. Select the field codes that begin with the word "print" and cut
   them from the letter.

3. Print the document.

4. If necessary, paste the field codes back into the document. Word
   uses the fields following the ZIP Code to create a fax cover sheet
   for the letter, so you do not need to paste the PRINT fields back
   in the document if you are not creating a fax cover sheet.
