INSTALLING THE MAINTENANCE RELEASE OF MICROSOFT MULTIPLAN VERSION 4.2
=====================================================================

Hard Disk System
----------------

To install this maintenance release of Multiplan on a hard disk
system, do the following:

 1. Place the enclosed DM0244 disk in your floppy disk drive.

 2. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following and press
    ENTER

      copy <drive>:\mp.exe <destination>

where <drive> is the floppy disk drive containing the DM0244 disk
and <destination> is the location of your Multiplan program
directory. For example, if your Multiplan directory is on drive C
and is named MP and the DM0244 disk is in drive A, type the
    following and press ENTER:

      copy a:\mp.exe c:\mp

If you receive the message "Access Denied," the MP.EXE file at the
destination (the Multiplan program directory) has the MS-DOS Read-Only
attribute set. To make the MP.EXE file accessible, type the following
at the MS-DOS command prompt and press ENTER

     <pathname1>\attrib -r <pathname2>\mp.exe

where <pathname1> is the location of your MS-DOS directory and
<pathname2> is the location of the Multiplan program directory. For
example, if your MS-DOS and Multiplan directories are on drive C and
are named DOS and MP, type the following and press ENTER:

     c:\dos\attrib -r c:\mp\mp.exe

This command turns off the Read-Only attribute on the MP.EXE file,
allowing you to successfully execute the previous COPY command.

Dual Floppy Disk System

To install this maintenance release of Multiplan on a dual floppy disk
system, do the following:

 1. Place the Multiplan Program disk in drive A and the enclosed

CORRECTING CORRUPTED MULTIPLAN FILES
====================================

The enclosed Multiplan 4.2 maintenance release (dated 10/29/90) does
not repair files that have already become corrupt. It does, however,
prevent the files from being corrupted in the future. To repair files
that are corrupt, follow the steps below.

NOTE: Some files may be altered beyond repair.

 1. Start Multiplan.

 2. From the Transfer menu, choose Load and select the corrupted
    file.

 3. From the Transfer menu, choose Save. Change the filename so
that the original file will not be overwritten. Using the TAB key,
move to the Mode field. Select Symbolic by pressing S. Press ENTER.
The file will be saved in Symbolic file format.

If the file fails to save and the computer stops responding
("hangs"), restart your computer and begin again with step 1. When
you get to step 3, instead of choosing the Symbolic mode, choose one
of the other options, such as Microsoft Excel. If the file fails to
save to any of the save modes, the file is damaged beyond repair.

 4. From the Transfer menu, choose Clear. Select the All option.

 5. From the Transfer menu, choose Load. Select the file that was
saved in step 3. The Symbolic file will be loaded.

 6. From the Transfer menu, choose Save. Using the TAB key, move to
the Mode field. Select Normal. Press ENTER. The file will be saved
to the Multiplan normal file format.

The file will now be free of any corruption that might cause your
computer to hang. There may still be some bad data in the file,
usually in the form of unprintable characters such as hearts and happy
faces, but you can now safely delete these characters. You can now use
the file with the updated version of Multiplan without further
problems.
