The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 3.0 and 4.0
 - Microsoft PowerPoint for the Macintosh, version 3.0 and 4.0

SUMMARY
=======

There are three different types of preview images available in PowerPoint,
depending on version and the type of file selected in the dialog boxes that
display preview images:

 - PowerPoint 4.x for Windows (Macintosh)
 - PowerPoint 3.x for Windows (Macintosh)
 - PowerPoint 2.x for Windows (Macintosh)

These preview images, or thumbnails, are displayed when you choose Open
from the File menu, select a filename. When in PowerPoint 3.x, these
preview images are also available when choosing Apply Template, or Open
ClipArt dialogs.

If the filename selected is for a PowerPoint 3.0 presentation file that was
last saved on the same platform as the version of PowerPoint 3.0 that is
being run (Windows or Macintosh), then the preview image will be a
thumbnail of the first slide in the presentation.

If the filename selected is for a PowerPoint 3.0 presentation file that was
last saved on a different platform as the version of PowerPoint 3.0 that is
being run (Windows or Macintosh), then the preview image will be a generic
thumbnail indicating that it is a PowerPoint 3.0 file and which platform it
was last saved on:

This is a PowerPoint for Macintosh presentation

This is a PowerPoint for Windows presentation

PowerPoint 2.x file preview images will be a generic thumbnail indicating
that it is a PowerPoint 2.x file, if it is in the same platform format as
the platform of PowerPoint 3.0 that is being used to access the file:

This is a PowerPoint 2.0 for Windows presentation

This is a PowerPoint 2.0 for Macintosh presentation

PowerPoint 3.0 cannot open a PowerPoint 2.x file that is in a different
platform file format (the file will have to be translated first). If a
non-translated PowerPoint 2.x file is opened on a different platform, no
preview image will be displayed.

NOTE: In PowerPoint for Windows, files do not need to have a .PPT extension
for the preview image to be displayed.
