The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b,
   2.0c

Summary:

When you run the LaunchExcel or LaunchPowerpoint macros, which are
supplied with Word for Windows in the NEWMACRO.DOC document, the
following error message occurs if the Microsoft Excel or PowerPoint
program directories are not in the PATH statement:

Cannot find or run the application.

Workaround
----------

Use a text editor to add the Microsoft Excel or PowerPoint program
directory to the PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT. After you modify
AUTOEXEC.BAT, restart (reboot) your computer to activate the new PATH
statement.

More Information:

The LaunchExcel and LaunchPowerpoint macros use the WordBasic Shell
statement to start their respective applications. The Shell statement
uses only the executable filename to start the application and does
not include the path to that executable file. As a result, these
macros rely on the PATH statement to find the Microsoft Excel or
PowerPoint program file.
