The information in this article applies to:

   2.0c
 - Microsoft Windows operating system versions 3.0 and 3.1

SUMMARY
=======

If you run the Word for Windows Setup program, sometimes the following
error message occurs, even when Word is not running and does not
appear in the Windows Task List:

Word for Windows is already running; please close all your
   applications and run Setup again.

This happens if, prior to running Word Setup, you opened a file in a
different application, such as Microsoft Excel, that contains a link
to a Word document and you chose Yes when the application prompted you
to update the remote link.

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Even though Word does not appear in the Windows Task List, Windows
considers Word to be running as a result of the remote link. The
problem persists even if you close the file that contains the link to
a Word document.

Note: The above error message occurs only if the link to your Word
document contains text. Because Windows runs WINWORD.EXE when you
update the remote link, the error does not occur if you link to a
picture in a Word document.

Workaround
----------

If this error message occurs when you run Word Setup, exit and restart
Windows.

NOTE: Opening the Clipboard Viewer and deleting the contents of the
Clipboard does not resolve this problem.
