The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b,
   2.0c
 - Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary:

If you apply underline character formatting to bold TrueType text, the
underline may print bold, or thicker than it prints on non-bold
TrueType text. For example, if you type a line of Times New Roman or
Arial text, apply bold character formatting to a portion of the text,
and then apply underline formatting to the entire line, the underline
beneath the bold text prints thicker.

Microsoft has reproduced this problem on Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet
Series II and III printers using the Times New Roman, Courier New and
Arial TrueType fonts supplied with Windows version 3.1. The problem
has not been reproduced with other TrueType fonts, and it does not
occur on the HP LaserJet 4 series printers.

Workarounds
-----------

 - Format bold, underlined text for a printer font, such as CG Times
   or Univers, instead.

   -or-

 - Format bold, underlined text for a TrueType font other than Times
   New Roman or Arial.

More Information:

The underline displays correctly in Word in print preview and in
normal or page layout view. Furthermore, the problem does not occur in
Word version 1.1a.
