SYMPTOMS
========

In Word for Windows, a numbered list may change from alphabetic number
format ("a, b, c..." or "A, B, C...") to roman numeral format ("i, ii,
iii..." or "I, II, III...") after the letters "I," "V," or "X." This
problem occurs if you number the paragraphs one at a time as you
create the list.

For example, if you number a list as you create it, Word uses "II" to
number the item following the letter "I." Similarly, Word uses "VI"
and "XI" to number the item following the letters "V" and "X,"
respectively.

This problem also occurs if you renumber a list in which the first
numbered item in the selection begins with "I," "V," or "X."

Word applies the alphabetic number format correctly if you select the
entire list after you create it and then number the list.

STATUS
======

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND
==========

 - Type the list first, select the list, and then apply alphabetic
   numbering to the list. When you use the Bullets and Numbering
   command from the Tools menu to number the entire list, the
   alphabetic numbering is correct.

   -or-

 - If you need to renumber an alphabetically numbered list, make sure
   your selection of list items begins with a letter other than I, V,
   or "X."

   -or-

 - Create a glossary entry or macro that inserts a SEQ field with the
   the first character of "alphabetic"). For example, you could use
   the following SEQ field to create a numbered list in uppercase
   alphabetic number format:

      {SEQ LIST \* Alphabetic}
