The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Works for MS-DOS, version 3.0
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary:

In the Works word processor, if you enter 85 line draw characters
(ALT+196) on the same line, the eighty-fifth character appears as
two question marks instead of a line draw character.

If you continue to enter line draw characters after the eighty-fifth
character, only blanks appear until you reach the next line.

To remove the question marks, either press the BACKSPACE key until you
delete the eighty-fifth character, or enter enough line draw
characters to extend to the next line.

More Information:

This problem occurs because Works uses ASCII character 196 internally
as its nonbreaking hyphen. This problem also occurs with ASCII
character 202 (used internally by Works as a nonbreaking space).

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Works for
MS-DOS, version 3.0. We are researching this problem and will post new
information here as it becomes available.
