The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b,
   2.0c
 - Microsoft Windows operating system versions 3.0 and 3.1
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary:

When you paste link a selection of a Word for Windows document that
contains a footnote into a different (target) Word document, the
character formatting of the footnote reference changes when you update
the link. Word formats the footnote reference with the same character
formatting as that of the first character of the word that precedes
it.

For example, if the footnote reference (which Word formats as
superscript by default) follows a word whose first character is
formatted as 30-point Arial, Word reformats the footnote reference as
30-point Arial and removes the superscript character formatting the
first time you update the link. Before you update that link, the
footnote reference appears correctly in the target document.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word versions 2.0,
2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, and 2.0c. We are researching this problem and
will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it
becomes available.

Workaround
----------

NOTE: Word inserts an INCLUDE field when you paste link from a
  different Word document.

Before you update the link that contains the footnote reference,
remove the \* MERGEFORMAT switch from the INCLUDE field. For example,
modify the following INCLUDE field

   {INCLUDE c:\\winword2\\test.doc intern_link2 \* mergeformat}

so it appears as shown below:

   {INCLUDE c:\\winword2\\test.doc intern_link2}

More Information:

Word also reformats the remainder of the word that precedes the
footnote reference with the same character formatting as that of the
first character of the word that precedes it.

Word only reformats auto-numbered footnote references. If your
footnote reference is a custom footnote mark, Word does not change its
character format in the link result.

Similarly, Word does not change the character format of footnote
references (whether they are auto-numbered footnotes or custom
footnote marks) if you paste the selection instead of linking it.
