SUMMARY
=======

To save local disk space, you can move the Word Commands folder to a
server location. This will allow multiple users to share the same Word
Commands folder. Note that this is only possible with Macintoshes
running System 7.x. This procedure also considerably slows Word's
startup, spell checking, and grammar checking functions.

The procedure for this is as follows:

1. Make sure Word is not running by selecting the Application menu
   (next to the Balloon Help icon) and verifying that "Microsoft Word"
   is not on the list. If it is, select Microsoft Word, then choose
   Quit from the File menu.

2. Open the Word folder (the one containing the Word Commands folder)
   on the local hard disk.

3. Log on to the network server and create a folder in an appropriate
   location in which to store the shared Word Commands folder.

4. Drag the Word Commands folder from the local hard drive to the new
   folder on the network drive. A copy of Word Commands will now be
   located on the network drive.

5. Single-click the Word Commands folder (on the network drive) and
   choose Make Alias from the File menu.

6. Delete the Word Commands folder from the local drive (or drag it to
   another folder for testing purposes before deleting).

7. Drag the Word Commands alias from the network drive into the local
   hard disk's Word folder and remove the word "alias" and the space
   preceding it from the name.

8. Start Word and test a command (such as Spelling or Thesaurus) to
   verify the successful completion of the move.

MORE INFORMATION
================

This is an effective way to conserve local disk space, but it is only
applicable to Macintoshes running System 7.x, and it does slow Word's
startup, spell checking, and grammar checking.

We recommend that the network system administrator set this up so that
folders and files cannot be deleted accidentally. To protect the Word
Commands folder on the server, select it and choose Sharing from the
File menu. Select the "Can't be removed, renamed or deleted" check box
and then close the dialog box. At the prompt to "Save changes to
privileges for <foldername>," Choose Save.
