SYMPTOMS
========

When you restart Microsoft Windows 3.1 in 386 enhanced mode after you
install the Microsoft Windows Printing System (WPS) version 1.0, you are
returned to an MS-DOS command prompt.

RESOLUTION
==========

To correct this problem, modify the [386Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI file
by either inserting a semicolon (;) at the beginning of any third-party
virtual communication driver or at the beginning of the Windows virtual
communication driver (VCD.386) as follows:

   ;DEVICE=VCD.386

The installation of the Windows Printing System places the line
DEVICE=VCD.386 in the [386Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI file. The purpose
of this driver is to provide serial bidirectional communication for a
Hewlett-Packard (HP) series printer. If the printer requires parallel
communication, then the Windows virtual communication driver may not be
required.
