The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b,
   2.0c
 - Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1
-------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When you print a Word for Windows document that contains a PRINT field
using the Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4/4M printer driver
(HPPCL5E.DRV), the following error message may occur:

It will not be possible to send PRINT field data to the
printer with the currently installed printer driver.
Do you want to continue printing?

CAUSE
=====

This happens if you use version 1.03 of the LaserJet 4 printer driver
(HPPCL5E.DRV), which does not support PRINT fields. It does not happen
if you use version 1.08 or later of the LaserJet 4 printer driver. The
latest version of this printer driver is available on the Windows
Driver Library (WDL) or through the Microsoft Download Library (MSDL).
For information on MSDL or obtaining the WDL, query on the following

This error message commonly occurs when you use the WaterMark macro
from the NEWMACRO.DOC file supplied with Word. If you select the First
Page option in the WaterMark dialog box to place the watermark only on
the first page of your document, the macro inserts a PRINT field in
the first header of your document. If you subsequently clear the
Different First Page option in the Header/Footer dialog box to turn
off the first header, the error message persists, as described in the
next section.

Note: The WaterMark macro is designed for use only with a PostScript
printer.

PRINT Field in First Header or First Footer
-------------------------------------------

If you insert a PRINT field in a first header or first footer and
subsequently clear the Different First Page option in the
Header/Footer dialog box, the above error message persists, even
though your document no longer contains a first header or first
footer. This happens because Word retains the first header or first
footer contents; in other words, your document still contains the
PRINT field, even though it does not display or print. By design, when
Word prints, it reads the contents of the entire document, so it
encounters the PRINT field and generates the above error message.

WORKAROUND
==========

Use the following instructions to completely remove the PRINT field
from the first header or first footer of your document:

1. From the View menu, choose Normal.

2. Be sure the Field Codes command on the View menu has a check mark
so that all fields show their codes. (If this command does not have
a check mark, choose Field Codes to switch to field code view.)

3. From the View menu, choose Header/Footer.

4. Select the Different First Page option.

5. Select First Header or First Footer from the Header/Footer list and
   then choose OK.

Note: If you used the WaterMark macro to insert a watermark on only
the first page of your document, the PRINT field is located in the
   first header.

6. In the header pane, select the PRINT field and delete it.

7. Close the header pane.

8. From the View menu, choose Header/Footer. Clear the Different First
Page option and then choose OK.

9. Close the header pane and then print your document. The error
   message should no longer occur.
