SYMPTOMS
========

When using Formula Typsetting Commands in Word to create formulas, the
spelling checker may flag text within the formula as misspelled. When
the paragraph marks are turned off to display the completed formulas,
the spelling checker still flags the text of the formula as misspelled.

For example, the following formula (where the ".\" is the formula
character COMMAND+OPTION+BACKSLASH [\])

   a.\s.\up8(n,m)

produces the following when paragraph marks are hidden:

    n
   a
    m

When spell checked, "up8" and "n,m" are flagged as misspelled,
regardless of whether the paragraph marks are showing or not.

WORKAROUND
==========

If the document is long and will be spell checked a number of times,
it may be beneficial to create a new custom dictionary and add the
formula words to it. To create a new custom dictionary, follow these
steps:

1. From the Tools menu, select Preferences. Choose the Spelling
   category.

2. In the Spelling Preferences dialog box, choose New. Choose a
   location and type a name for the new dictionary. Choose Save and
   then close the Preferences box.

3. When the document is spell checked, add each of the formula words
   to the new custom dictionary. (Note: When adding a word to the new
   dictionary, verify that the correct custom dictionary shows at the
   top of the Add Word To drop down list).

The next time the document is spell checked, the formulas that have
been added to the new custom dictionary will not be flagged as
misspelled.
