SYMPTOMS
========

If you insert a REF field outside a table to refer to a bookmarked
expression in a table that uses cell reference codes (such as r1c1 or
r2c4), the following error message appears in place of the REF field
result in your Word for Windows document:

   !The expression not in table.

CAUSE
=====

This error occurs because the REF field inserts the bookmarked
expression (or formula), not the result of the expression. If the
expression uses table cell reference codes, these codes are
meaningless outside a table, so Word produces the above error message
instead.

The error message does not occur if you insert the REF field in the
same table where the bookmarked expression is located or if you refer
to a bookmarked expression that does not use table cell reference
codes.

WORKAROUNDS
===========

 - Use an EXPRESSION (=) field instead of a REF field to refer to the
   results of a bookmarked expression in a table. For example, insert
   {=bookmarkname} instead of {REF bookmarkname}.

   -or-

 - Change the bookmarked expression so it uses bookmarks instead of
   cell reference codes. See page 309 in the Word for Windows "User's
   Guide" for more information on this workaround.
