INTRODUCTION
============

This package contains the latest update of the MacWrite II
converter for Microsoft Word for the Macintosh. This is the first
update of the MacWrite II converter since Word version 5.0 for the
Macintosh was released in December, 1991. The converter can be used
to both read from and write to MacWrite II format.

If this shipment has arrived in unsatisfactory condition or you
have questions about installing or using the MacWrite II converter,
please call Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS). In the United
States, call (425) 635-7200 Monday through Friday between 6:00 A.M.
and 6:00 P.M. Pacific time. Outside the United States, contact the
Microsoft subsidiary for your area. To locate your subsidiary, see the
Microsoft World Wide Offices Web site at:

   http://www.microsoft.com/worldwide/default.htm

NOTE: To use the MacWrite II converter, you must be running Microsoft
Word version 5.0 or 5.1 for the Macintosh.

To install the MacWrite II converter update
-------------------------------------------

1. If you are working in Word, save your documents, and then quit
   Word.

2. Copy the new MacWrite II Converter file from the enclosed GC0803
disk to the Word Commands folder on your hard disk. The Word
Commands folder is usually stored in the same folder as Word.

3. If you are prompted to replace an existing file, choose the OK
   button.

4. Restart Word.

Converter Improvements
----------------------

The new MacWrite II converter corrects several problems in the
original converter that affect the quality of formatting retention
when converting to or from MacWrite II format, as well some
problems that affect the overall stability of the conversion
process. The following problems have been corrected:

1. Word sometimes quits unexpectedly under either of the following
   conditions:

    a. When opening a MacWrite II document containing a date stamp
for which Save And Time Preference is set to Never Update in
       MacWrite II

    b. When closing a document after saving a copy of the file in
       MacWrite II format

2. Header and footer text sometimes overlaps body text when saving
   in MacWrite II format.

3. The top, bottom, left, and/or right margin settings are
sometimes incorrect when saving in MacWrite II format.

4. Font formatting originally applied by way of a style definition
in Word for the Macintosh is lost when saving in MacWrite II
   format.

5. The conversion status indicator is not updated while opening a
   document from MacWrite II format.

6. Some page number positions within headers and footers are not
retained correctly when opening a document from MacWrite II
format. Specifically, page numbering specified to appear
centered within a header instead appears left-aligned, and page
numbering defined to appear right-aligned within a footer
   instead appears left-aligned.

7. File type and creator are not updated properly when a document
is saved in MacWrite II format to replace (overwrite) an
existing Word for the Macintosh document. Specifically, the file
type and creator remains WDBN and MSWD instead of changing to
   MW2D and MWII, respectively.

8. Time glossary entries are lost when saving in MacWrite II
   format.

9. Hanging indent formatting within a footer is not retained
correctly when saving in MacWrite II format.
