 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 4.0c
 - Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1

SYMPTOMS
========

If you receive a general protection (GP) fault immediately upon
opening a presentation in PowerPoint, there may be a problem with the
preview image that is stored with the presentation. To test for this
problem, do the following:

1. From the File menu, choose Open.

2. Instead of selecting the filename with your mouse, manually type the
   filename. Choose OK.

3. If the presentation opens correctly, save it with a new name. You
   should then be able to open the new file in the usual way.

MORE INFORMATION
================

PowerPoint stores a preview image of the first slide in the
presentation whenever the presentation is saved. If opening a
presentation causes a GP fault in PowerPoint, there may be a problem
with the preview image.

The image is created when Windows asks the video driver to make a
particular type of bitmap (a 16-color Device Independent Bitmap or
DIB) of the first slide in the presentation. Should this function be
incorrectly implemented by the video driver, a GP fault may occur when
you attempt to open the file, but only if the preview image is shown
in the File Open dialog in PowerPoint. Manually typing the filename
into the File Open dialog opens the presentation without displaying
the preview image, and the file opens normally.

This problem usually only occurs on a computer other than the one that
last modified/saved the presentation. To correct the problem, simply
save the presentation after successfully opening it using the method
described above. This will replace the faulty DIB, eliminating the
source of the problem.

NOTE: In some cases this problem will not generate an error. Instead,
PowerPoint will exit to the Program Manager as soon as you select the
file in the File Open dialog box. When you experience this problem you
can still open the file from File Manager.
