SYMPTOMS
========

You cannot select a language in the Format Language dialog box or a
dictionary in the Main Dictionary dialog box if a subdirectory of the
directory where the dictionary file is located has the same name as
the language or dictionary you try to select. Instead of selecting the
language or dictionary, Word for MS-DOS changes to the subdirectory
with the same name.

For example, if the legal dictionary file SPELL-LG.LEX is located in
your Word program directory and this directory contains a subdirectory
named LEGAL (such as C:\WORD\LEGAL), you cannot select Legal even
though it appears in both of the following dialog boxes:

 - Format Language dialog box, in the Mark Selected Text As list.

 - Main Dictionary dialog box, in the Language list. (To open the Main
   Dictionary dialog box, choose Customize from the Tools menu, choose
   the Spell Options button, and then choose the Main Dictionary
   button.)

When you try to select Legal in these dialog boxes, Word changes to the
LEGAL subdirectory instead.
