 - Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS
========

If you choose the Add Field button on the print merge bar to add a new
field to a print merge data document in Word for MS-DOS, the following
error message may occur:

   Word cannot perform this action because it will exceed the maximum
   size of a table.

CAUSE
=====

This problem occurs in Print Merge Helper because columns are
automatically set at 1.5 inches. This setting allows the creations of
19 fields. If more columns are required, decrease the margins
settings.

STATUS
======

Because the maximum size of a Word table is 50 columns, this error
message should not occur. For example, in a table that is not part of
a print merge data document, you can add more than 19 columns.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 6.0 for
MS-DOS. We are researching this problem and will post new information
here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND
==========

Instead of using the print merge helper to add a new field to your
data document, use the following procedure to convert your data
document to a tab-delimited file:

1. From the Table menu, choose Select Table.

2. From the Table menu, choose Convert Table To Text.

3. In the Convert Table To Text dialog box, select the Tabs option and
   then choose OK.
