SYMPTOMS
========

When you use the MINIMAL.KBD driver supplied with Word for MS-DOS to create
a custom SCREEN.VID video driver, the ALT+G key combination that starts
Grammatik no longer works.

CAUSE
=====

The MINIMAL.KBD driver does not support the TSR protocol that Grammatik
uses to launch Word when you use the GMKWP command. As a result, Word does
not trap the ALT+G key combination used to start Grammatik, so Grammatik
cannot start.

WORKAROUND
==========

Use a standard SCREEN.VID file instead of MINIMAL.KBD when you want to run
Word and Grammatik.

Grammatik 5 and Word
--------------------

Grammatik 5 is the grammar checker supplied with Word version 6.0 for
MS-DOS. If you install Grammatik, you can start Word through
Grammatik by typing "GMKWP" (without the quotation marks) at the
command prompt.

When you start Word through Grammatik, you can activate Grammatik by
pressing ALT+G from within Word. When you press ALT+G, Grammatik runs
the File Save As command in Word by sending the ALT+F2 key
combination. After you complete the Save As operation, Grammatik
closes Word and starts itself to check the grammar in your document.
After you check the grammar in your Word document, Grammatik restarts
Word and opens the document.

MINIMAL.KBD
-----------

The MINIMAL.KBD file is a keyboard handler file you can add to your
SCREEN.VID file by choosing the Add Safe Keyboard Support for TSRs
option during Word Setup. You can also add MINIMAL.KBD to your
SCREEN.VID file using the MAKEVID.EXE utility, supplied with Word. For
more information on the MAKEVID.EXE utility, query on the following

The MINIMAL.KBD driver does not support the TSR protocol that
Grammatik uses to start Word when you use the GMKWP command. As a
result, Word does not trap the ALT+G key combination used to start
Grammatik, so Grammatik cannot start. MINIMAL.KBD was designed to
solve problems that occur with the default keyboard handler; it was
not designed to run with Word through Grammatik using the GMKWP
command.

Note: MINIMAL.KBD replaces the BIOSSAFE.KBD keyboard handler supplied
with Word versions 5.x. BIOSSAFE.KBD supports the TSR protocol used by
Grammatik, so this problem does not occur in Word versions 5.x.
