SYMPTOMS
========

If you use a FTNREF field to reference a footnote numbered with a
custom footnote reference mark, Word for Windows displays the
sequential number of the footnote instead of the custom reference
mark.

For example, if you use an asterisk (*) as the custom footnote
reference mark for the seventh footnote in the document and you apply
a bookmark named "salesfigs" to the asterisk, the result of the FTNREF
field is "7" instead of "*":

   For more information, see note {FTNREF salesfigs}.

Result:

   For more information, see note 7.

WORKAROUND
==========

Use a REF field instead of a FTNREF field to reference a footnote with
a custom footnote reference mark. For example, you can modify the
above example as follows:

   For more information, see note {REF salesfigs}.

Result:

   For more information, see note *.

NOTE: The REF field does not produce correct results for automatically
numbered footnotes. This happens because the REF field updates the
footnote number, which produces an incorrect result. You should always
use a FTNREF field to reference automatically numbered footnotes.
