The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft MS-DOS operating system version 6.0
---------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When you compare a set of files backed up using either Microsoft
Backup for MS-DOS (MSBACKUP.EXE) or Microsoft Backup for Windows
(MWBACKUP.EXE), you may receive a message stating that the file
DEFAULT.CAT has changed since the backup was made. This message
appears every time the DEFAULT.CAT file from a backup set is compared.

If the backup was made using MSBACKUP.EXE, the following error message
appears when you do a compare on the file DEFAULT.CAT:

   DEFAULT.CAT does not match.

If the backup was made using MWBACKUP.EXE, the following error message
appears:

   The file "c:\dos\default.cat" has a different time from the file in
   the backup set. They will not be compared.

CAUSE
=====

These error messages occur because DEFAULT.CAT is used by the backup
programs (MSBACKUP.EXE and MWBACKUP.EXE) during the backup process and
is immediately rewritten when the backup is complete. Therefore, the
file always appears to have changed when a compare is made later.
