SYMPTOMS
========

When you use the Create Envelope command to print a size 10 envelope
to the Hewlett-Packard (HP) DeskWriter or DeskWriter C, the return
address may print in the wrong location or print with its left edge
truncated.

CAUSES
======

Printing in the wrong location occurs because of a problem with the
DeskWriter and DeskWriter C drivers.

The left-edge truncation has two separate causes:

1. You are using an older version of the DeskWriter or DeskWriter C
   printer driver.

2. You accepted center alignment (the default) in the Create Envelope
   Page Setup dialog box.

WORKAROUNDS
===========

Here are three strategies for printing envelopes to the DeskWriter or
DeskWriter C using the Create Envelope command. Each strategy has
advantages and disadvantages.

1. Update to DeskWriter driver version 3.9 (or later) or DeskWriter C
   driver version 3.0 (or later).

   Although updating corrects the truncation problem, the return address
   will not print in an ideal location. The updated drivers cause the
   return address to print about .5 inch from the envelope's top edge and
   about 1 inch from the envelope's left edge. HP is aware of the problem,
   and at this time, neither HP nor Microsoft know of a workaround.

   To obtain an updated version of the DeskWriter or DeskWriter C printer
   driver, contact Hewlett-Packard at (800) 752-0900.

2. If you do not update the driver version, from the File menus choose
   Page Setup, change the Alignment setting to Left. In this
   case, to print an envelope, use these settings:

      Media = Envelope
      Orientation = Portrait
      Alignment = Left
      Envelope size = Size 10
      Reduce or Enlarge = 93%

   This workaround solves the truncation problem, but has the
   disadvantage of printing the return address in the wrong location.
   (See workaround 1 for more details on this problem.)

3. If you do not update the driver, type a few spaces before each line
   of the return address. These spaces move each line to the right and
   prevent truncation, though the address still may not print
   vertically as expected. In the Create Envelope Page Setup dialog box,
   use these settings:

      Media = Envelope
      Orientation = Portrait
      Alignment = Center
      Envelope size = Size 10
