SYMPTOMS
========

A compiled Word index fails to distinguish between index entries that
appear on the same numbered page but in different sections. For
instance, if the entry .i.river; appears on page 3 of section 1 and
page 3 of section 2, the compiled index displays:

   river 3
   (Nested Index)

   river, 3
   (Run-in Index)

CAUSE
=====

The problem occurs because of a limitation in Word's indexing
capability.

WORKAROUND
==========

To distinguish index entries in different sections but on pages having
the same page number, designate the section number as an index
subentry. You can apply the hidden format to the subentry text so that
it does not print in the main body of the document.

For example, if the index entry .i.river; appears on page 3 of section
1 and page 3 of section 2, modify the index entries to read
.i.river:Chapter 1; and .i.river:Chapter 2;, respectively. Word now
compiles the index as follows:

   river
        Chapter 1 3
        Chapter 2 3
   (Nested Index)

   river: Chapter 1, 3; Chapter 2, 3
   (Run-in Index)
