The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.1
--------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

The border of a graphic in a document created in Microsoft Word version
5.0 or 5.1 for the Macintosh and saved as Rich Text Format (RTF) is lost
when you open the document in Word versions 6.0 and later.

CAUSE
=====

Borders applied to pictures in Word 5.0 and 5.1 for the Macintosh are
character formats and not picture attributes. When you save a document
containing bordered pictures in RTF, the RTF reader does not interpret the
graphic border for translation. Thus, when you open the document in Word
6.0 and later, there is no reference to a border and none is applied.

WORKAROUND
==========

To work around this problem, save the document in Word for the Macintosh
format instead of RTF to ensure that picture borders are retained.
