The Protect Cell option under the Format menu applies to the currently
active cell.
 
For example, if cell A1 is protected and then a range of cells is selected,
making A1 the active cell, the Protect Cell option will have a check mark
next to it. This indicates that the currently active cell has the Protect
Cell applied to it, but the other cells in the selected range may or may
not have Protect Cell applied to them.
