SUMMARY
=======

The following information describes how to create default text or
values fields in database fields.

Default text or values fields are useful when you want to have data to
appear automatically when creating new records. For example, if all
the address records in your mailing database are located in the state
of Washington, then you can designate "WA" to appear automatically in
the State field.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Select the field in which you want the default text or value to
   appear.

2. In version 4.0, choose Field from the Format menu. In Works 3.0,
choose Format Field from the Form menu.

3. Under Formula Or Default Value, choose Default for a field that
   will contain a constant value.

4. Type the text or numeric value in the box. You can also choose
default date or time. You cannot designate default calculations.

5. Fields containing default information are entered automatically
for all NEW records. Records that were created before setting the
   default will not be updated.

6. Default information can be changed by typing over the data. For
example, if the default for the State field is "WA", you can simply
type other text, such as "CA", and it will not affect the field
   default.
