SYMPTOM
=======

When you insert a month glossary entry into a Word document, you get
unexpected "garbage" characters and a scrambled appearance.

CAUSE
=====

The problem occurs under System 7.1 if the Date & Time Control Panel
has the System's short date set for the "Year/Day/Month" format.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this is a problem with running Word versions
5.0 and 5.1 for the Macintosh under System 7.1. We will post new
information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes
available.

WORKAROUND
==========

To use Word s month glossaries, set the short date to a different
format using the following steps:

1. From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels.

2. Double-click the Date & Time control panel to open it. Click the
   Date Formats button.

3. Choose an alternate custom date format from the Short Date menu. If
   you use Word 5.1, do not choose the "Year/Month/Day" format,
   because you may experience crashing problems under limited,
   specific circumstances with "Year/Month/Day" chosen.

4. Choose OK.
