The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft MS-DOS operating system version 6.2
--------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

After you install MS-DOS 6.2 and the optional Windows-based programs,
you may be unable to run Windows.

CAUSE
=====

This problem occurs when a virtual device driver (VxD) for Windows
fails to load due to a problem in the SYSTEM.INI file.

If a third-party program places its device=<VxD> statement between the
MS-DOS "Setup Modification" comments in the SYSTEM.INI file, the
device statement may be corrupted when MS-DOS 6.2 Setup updates the
SYSTEM.INI file.

RESOLUTION
==========

To work around this problem, edit the backup copy of your SYSTEM.INI
file (called SYSTEM.620) and note the correct device= statement for
your third-party VxD. Edit your current SYSTEM.INI file and add that
statement to the [386Enh] section.
