The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.1, and 5.1a
--------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When you open a Word for MS-DOS document in Word for the Macintosh, all
headings will appear as normal (flush-left) text in outline view. For
example, what originally appears in Word for MS-DOS as

   Heading 1
      Heading 2
         Heading 3

instead appears in Word for the Macintosh outline view as:

   Heading 1
   Heading 2
   Heading 3

CAUSE
=====

This problem occurs if you do not attach a style sheet to your Word for
MS-DOS document that contains heading level styles coinciding with headings
applied in outline view.

Word for MS-DOS and Word for the Macintosh retain outline information
within a document differently. Word for the Macintosh depends on heading
level paragraph styles to format outline headings. With Word for MS-DOS,
you can raise or lower heading levels within outline view without actually
applying styles to the text.

Word for the Macintosh depends on heading level style information from a
Word for MS-DOS style sheet to establish the proper paragraph heading
styles and retain appearance of an outline when opening a Word for MS-DOS
document.

WORKAROUND
==========

Prior to opening a Word for MS-DOS document into Word for the Macintosh,
attach a style sheet that contains heading paragraph styles coinciding with
each level in your outline. Appearance will subsequently be preserved for
all outline heading levels in Word for the Macintosh outline view.

MORE INFORMATION
================

If styles are not defined for all heading levels in the attached Word for
MS-DOS style sheet, those headings without an associated style appear
as normal text in Word for the Macintosh outline view.

In addition, whether or not heading level styles are applied in Word for
MS-DOS, any character and paragraph formatting applied to heading level
text are preserved and appear in Word for the Macintosh normal and
layout views.
