The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for Macintosh versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02, 4.0, 5.0,
   5.1
--------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOM
=======

Word cannot find optionally hyphenated text during a search when you use
Word s Find or Replace commands (Find or Change commands in Word 3.x and
4.0) if the Match Case feature is selected in the Find or Replace dialog
box.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for the Macintosh,
versions 3.x, 4.0, 5.0, and 5.1. This problem was corrected in Word for the
Macintosh version 6.0.

WORKAROUND
==========

To find all instances of a word, whether it contains an optional hyphen or
not, disable the Match Case option in the Find or Replace dialog box.

MORE INFORMATION
================

The special character used to search for optional hyphens in the Find and
Replace commands is "^-" (without the quotation marks). The Match Case
feature does not affect the use of "^-" when searching for optional
hyphens. However, by design, the Find and Replace commands should find a
word in the document, whether it contains an optional hyphen or not,
without specifying the optional hyphen in the Find What box.

Optional hyphens can be inserted using Word's Hyphenation tool or
manually by pressing COMMAND+HYPHEN (-).
