 1. Q. How much free disk space do I need to install Microsoft
       PowerPoint 4.0 for Windows?

    A. PowerPoint 4.0 for Windows comes with many different components
       and several installation options. If you choose the Complete
       installation option, all components are installed. A Complete
       installation requires 35 megabytes. The Typical installation
       requires 17 megabytes and the Laptop (Minimum) installation
       requires at least 10 megabytes. When using the Custom
       installation, you can specify exactly which components you want
       to install or omit. The space required for a Custom installation
       varies widely, depending on which options you choose.

       For a Workstation installation, you need at least 2 megabytes
       available on your local hard drive or in your user directory,
       but you may need more depending on how your system administrator
       configured the administrator's installation. If you want to
       perform an administrator's installation on a network file server
       or a shared directory, you need 40 megabytes of available space
       on the file server or in the shared directory.

 2. Q. What are the system requirements for installing PowerPoint 4.0
       for Windows?

    A. To install and use PowerPoint 4.0 for Windows successfully, you
       must have the following:

        - A personal computer with a 386 processor or higher (PowerPoint
          4.0 runs only in 386 enhanced mode)

        - The MS-DOS operating system version 3.1 or higher (MS-DOS
          version 5.0 or later is recommended)

        - The Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1 or later

        - Four megabytes of memory (8 megabytes recommended)

        - A hard disk with adequate disk space available (10 to 40
          megabytes, depending on the type of installation you choose)

        - A high-density floppy disk drive (either a 3.5-inch, 1.44
          megabyte, or a 5.25-inch, 1.2 megabyte drive)

        - A VGA, XGA, or any video adapter supported by Microsoft
          Windows version 3.1 or later (except CGA, EGA, and Hercules
          monochrome); a 256-color video adapter and compatible
          Microsoft Windows 3.1 driver is recommended

        - A Microsoft mouse or compatible pointing device

 3. Q. While installing PowerPoint 4.0, Setup did not ask me for disk
       9 or 10. Why?

    A. Some disks are not used when a Typical installation is chosen.
       PowerPoint Setup defaults to a Typical installation unless you
       select a different type, such as Custom/Complete or Minimum. A
       list of components that did or did not get installed can be found
       in the "Custom And Network Installations" section of the
       PowerPoint Readme Help file.

 4. Q. I have Microsoft Office 4.0, and just received the Microsoft
       Office 4.2 upgrade. Is there anything I need to know about
       the upgrade installation?

       A. If you are on a stand-alone system, you can install
          Microsoft Office 4.2 directly over the pre-existing
          version of Microsoft Office without losing your data
          files. However, if Microsoft Office 4.0 is installed on a
          network, the upgrade package will not permit you to
          perform an administrative setup (that is, using the
          SETUP/A command) into the same directory.

       To upgrade from Microsoft Office 4.0 to Office 4.2 on a network,
       follow this three-step procedure:

       1. Install Office 4.2 into a different shared location than
          Office 4.0.

          NOTE: This means the MSAPPS directory should also be
          installed to a different location than the MSAPPS
          directory that was installed with Microsoft Office 4.0.

       2. Have everyone using Microsoft Office 4.0 from the network
          server, upgrade to the new Office 4.2 installation.

       3. When all upgrades are completed, delete the 4.0 version of
          Microsoft Office from its shared location.

 5. Q. How do I show my PowerPoint presentation on a computer that
       doesn't have PowerPoint 4.0 installed?

       A. You can view PowerPoint presentations without installing
          PowerPoint. You simply need to install 16-bit PowerPoint
          Viewer on the machine where you plan to run the slide show.
          The PowerPoint Viewer disk is the last disk in the set of
          PowerPoint disks. It contains a special Setup program for
          the installation of just the PowerPoint Viewer.

          To install just the PowerPoint Viewer, using a copy of
          the PowerPoint Viewer disk, start the Viewer Setup
          program. That is, choose Run from the File menu, type
          "a:vsetup" (without the quotation marks) and press ENTER.

       If your presentations contain Media Player objects (such as video
       or sound), you may also need to install Microsoft Media Player
       when using the PowerPoint Viewer.

 6. Q. My presentation contains Media Player objects, but the computer
       on which I'm showing my presentation does not have Media Player
       installed. What do I do?

       NOTE: The following does not apply to PowerPoint version
       4.0c. If you have PowerPoint 4.0c, order article Q116422
       from the Microsoft PowerPoint FastTips Catalog. (To
       determine your version of PowerPoint, choose About Microsoft
       PowerPoint from the Help menu.)

    A. Install PowerPoint Viewer and Media Player on the computer. You
       will need to bring copies of the PowerPoint Setup disk (which is
       the first disk), and the PowerPoint Viewer disk (which is the
       last disk). To install them, follow this three-step procedure:

       1. Using the PowerPoint Setup disk, start the PowerPoint Setup
          program. That is, choose Run from the File menu and type
          "a:setup" (without the quotation marks) and press ENTER.

       2. Follow the on-screen instructions. When asked what type of
          installation you prefer, choose Custom/Complete.

       3. Clear the check boxes for all options except for the
          PowerPoint Viewer and Media Player. Media Player is listed
          under Shared Applications. Choose Continue to finish the
          installation.

       The PowerPoint Viewer and Media Player will now be available on
       the machine where you plan to run your slide show.

 7. Q. I did a complete installation of PowerPoint 4.0. How can I
       uninstall components I don't use?

    A. PowerPoint 4.0 includes a Setup utility that you can use to
       modify your installation of PowerPoint. In this Setup utility,
       you can simply select the check boxes of those components you
       want to install, and clear the check boxes of those components
       you want to remove.

       This Setup utility is not automatically installed, unless you
       have PowerPoint version 4.0c, even if you choose to perform a
       Complete installation of PowerPoint. By default, it is omitted to
       reduce the amount of disk space required for a Complete
       installation of PowerPoint.

       If you run the PowerPoint Setup program again, it will detect
       that you have already installed PowerPoint on your system, and
       automatically go into the Maintenance mode of Setup that
       allows you to modify your installation.

 8. Q. When trying to install PowerPoint 4.0, I get the error message
       "ACMSetup caused a general protection fault in Module
       MSSETUP.DLL." How do I correct this so PowerPoint gets installed?

    A. This error occurs when there are sections in the SYSTEM.INI
       file that are not separated by blank lines. If these lines
       get deleted or replaced with other entries during the
       installation of other programs, drivers, or utilities, you
       may experience this problem. In some configurations you may
       also experience a sharing violation when you choose Close to
       get rid of the general protection fault error message. This
       only occurs on systems where a swap file is being used.

       NOTE: Sometimes it may appear that there is a blank line,
       but the line actually contains one or more spaces. Inserting
       an additional blank line between sections ensures that there
       is at least one blank line as required.

       To work around this problem, perform the following four-step
       procedure:

       1. Edit the SYSTEM.INI file and add a blank line between
          each section. The first line in each section is enclosed
          in square brackets. The SYSTEM.INI file is a text file
          and can be edited in any standard text editor (such as
          Windows Notepad).

       2. Quit Windows.

       3. Restart Windows.

       4. Re-install PowerPoint 4.0. If you install the program to the
          same location, you should not have to delete any files before
          re-installing.

 9. Q. If I have already installed PowerPoint, how can I install the
       PowerPoint Setup program so that I can easily customize my
       installation and remove components I don't use?

    A. To install the Setup program when you have already installed
       PowerPoint, follow this five-step procedure:

       1. Run SETUP.EXE from the same location that you used to
          install PowerPoint originally (either the floppy disks,
          or a shared location on a network server).

       2. When the PowerPoint maintenance installation dialog box
          appears, choose the Add/Remove button.

       3. Select the Tools option, and then choose the Change Option
          button.

       4. Select the check box next to the Setup option in the Tools
          dialog box, and then choose the OK button to return to the
          Maintenance Mode dialog box.

       5. Make sure that the Tools option is selected, then choose OK to
          continue with the rest of the maintenance mode installation
          process.

10. Q. When I try to install PowerPoint 4.0 for Windows, I receive a
       message stating that there is insufficient disk space to complete
       the installation. How can I correct this problem?

    A. A Complete installation requires 35 megabytes, the Typical
       installation requires 17 megabytes, and the Laptop (Minimum)
       installation, requires at least 10 megabytes. If you are sure
       that you have adequate free disk space for the type of
       installation you selected, it may be that this error message is
       appearing for a different reason. For example, if you have a
       compressed hard drive, you may need up to 10 megabytes more hard
       disk space than usual, depending on the compression ratio used
       by your compression utility. When Setup checks for free disk
       space, it may display a false value because it is unable to
       detect actual disk space available when the drive is compressed.
