The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Publisher version 2.0
-------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========
After any network setup of Publisher version 2.0, the OLE (object-linking-
and-embedding) applications--such as ClipArt Gallery, Draw, Note-It, and
WordArt--may not be available from the Publisher toolbar, from menu
commands, or by choosing Insert Object from the Edit menu. For example, on
the File menu the ClipArt Gallery command will be unavailable (dimmed). If
you use a tool from the toolbar, you may receive the error:

Unable to launch or communicate with server application.

If some of these applications are available, they were installed
by another Microsoft application such as Microsoft Word for Windows.

RESOLUTION
==========
Try one of the following three resolutions.

Resolution 1
------------
The preferred resolution is to upgrade to Publisher 2.0a. This problem does
not occur in Publisher 2.0a. To obtain new or updated Microsoft products,
call Microsoft End User Sales at (800) 426-9400. If you are outside the
United States, contact the Microsoft subsidiary for your area. To locate
your subsidiary, call Microsoft International Customer Service at (206) 936-
8661.

-or-

Resolution 2
------------
Copy REGEDIT.EXE into the Windows directory and run SETUP /N again.

-or-

Resolution 3
------------
For each workstation, re-register the applications manually using the
following steps:
1. In File Manager, select the shared Windows directory and choose
   Search from the File menu.
2. In the Search For box, type the following and press ENTER:
      *.REG
You should find a *.REG file for each of Publisher's OLE applications
and for Publisher (MSPUB.REG), OLE 1.0 (OLE1.REG), and OLE 2.0
   (OLE2.REG).
3. Associate the .REG files with REGEDIT.EXE. For information about
associating files, search File Manager Help for the topic
"associating files." If the files are already associated with
   REGEDIT.EXE, skip to step 4.
4. Double-click each *.REG file. You should receive a message confirming
that the component has been registered.
5. As a test, run Publisher and draw a WordArt box. WordArt should run
   properly.

MORE INFORMATION
================
This problem occurs because the OLE applications have been installed, but
they have not been registered in the Registration Database.
Publisher 2.0 Setup looks for the Registration Information Editor
(REGEDIT.EXE) in the shared Windows directory. If it does not find it
there it does not register the shared OLE applications, and
Publisher cannot find them when they are needed. Publisher 2.0a
searches the shared Windows directory, the shared Windows SYSTEM
subdirectory, and the PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
(NOTE: On a shared installation of Windows there is only one
REGEDIT.EXE file, but multiple REG.DAT files--one for each user.
Each user's REG.DAT is stored in his or her Windows user directory.)
