1. Q. How can I rotate a picture that I have imported into Publisher?

   A. Publisher does not have the ability to rotate imported graphics.
You can only rotate graphical objects that you have created in
Publisher using Publisher s drawing tools. To rotate a graphic
created with Publisher s drawing tools, select the graphic and
choose Rotate/Flip from the Layout menu.

2. Q. What kind of graphics can I import into Publisher?

   A. Publisher provides the following graphic import filters:

      - Bitmaps (.BMP)
      - PC Paintbrush (.PCX)
      - Tagged Image File Format (.TIF)
      - Kodak Photo-CD (.PCD)
      - Computer Graphic Metafile (.CGM)
      - Windows Metafile (.WMF)
      - Micrografx Designer (.DRW)
      - Encapsulated Postscript (.EPS)

3. Q. Where can I get more clip art for Publisher?

   A. You can obtain additional clip art for Publisher from Microsoft
Publisher Design Pack versions 1.0 and Microsoft Publisher Special
Occasions Design Pack 1.0. The Publisher Design Packs provide you
with additional clip-art images, fonts, and Publisher templates. The
Publisher Design Packs are available through Microsoft End User Sales
      at (800) 426-9400.

In addition, any clip-art image that is in a format for which
Publisher has a graphic import filter should work with Publisher.

4. Q. When I import my scanned images into Publisher they don't
      import correctly. Why?

   A. There are two possible reasons why a graphic might come into
      Publisher differently than you expect.

      1. If the graphic comes in with the colors reversed (like a
photographic negative) it is because the header of the
graphic file contains a bit that has been switched.
This problem occurs most often with graphics that were
scanned and saved as .TIF files. To work around this problem,
try re-scanning the image and saving it as a .PCX file.

         -or-

      2. If the colors of the graphic look wrong when you import
it into Publisher, the problem may be due to one of the
         three following situations:

         a. The graphic contains more colors than your video driver
            can display.

         b. The graphic has more colors than Publisher can display
at one time (Publisher's limit is 256 colors or 256
            shades of gray).

         c. You have Publisher 2.0 and are importing a colored
.BMP file. If this is the case, correct the problem
by contacting Microsoft Publisher Product Support Services
and requesting a copy of Publisher 2.0a, which has an
            updated .BMP filter.

5. Q. When I try to import a picture into Publisher I get a message
saying I don't have a filter for it. I've reinstalled Publisher
and I get the same message. Why am I still getting this error
      message?

   A. There are two possible reasons why this problem may be occurring.

      1. You are attempting to import a picture for which Publisher
has no filter. For more information about which kinds of
graphics Publisher can import, please refer to page 271 of
your "Microsoft Publisher User's Guide" or order article
Q76385 from the Microsoft Publisher FastTips Catalog.

         -or-

      2. You have Hijaak Pro installed on your system. Hijaak Pro
installs approximately 40 filters in the MS Graphics Import
Filters section of your WIN.INI file. If you remove the
Hijaak filters (those that begin with the letters "HJ") from
your WIN.INI file and restart Windows, you will not have
this problem. Removing these filters will not affect the
operation of Hijaak Pro. For more information about removing
the Hijaak filters, order article Q104506 from the Microsoft
         Publisher FastTips Catalog.

6. Q. When I try to import a picture into Publisher, Publisher closes
and exits to Program Manager. None of my work is saved. What's
      going on?

   A. You probably have Hijaak Pro installed on your system. Hijaak Pro
installs approximately 40 filters in the MS Graphics Import Filters
section in your WIN.INI file. If you remove the Hijaak filters
(those that begin with the letters "HJ") from your WIN.INI file
and restart Windows, you will not have this problem. Removing these
filters will not affect the operation of Hijaak Pro. For more
information about removing the Hijaak filters, order article Q104506
from the Microsoft Publisher FastTips Catalog.

7. Q. How can I save a picture that I created in Publisher as a
      graphic?

   A. It is not possible to save a picture that you have created
in Publisher as a graphic. However, it is possible to save all
of the information on your page as an Encapsulated PostScript
File. To do this, load a PostScript printer through your Windows
Control Panel and refer to page 356 in your "Microsoft
      Publisher User's Guide."

8. Q. Every time I try to use the ClipArt Gallery I get a sharing
violation error message. Why is this happening?

   A. If you are getting a sharing error when attempting to import
a picture from the ClipArt Gallery, it is probably due
to a terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) utility called SmartCan.
SmartCan is a utility that is loaded by Symantec's Norton
      Desktop for Windows.

To correct this problem, open your AUTOEXEC.BAT file in a text
editor such as Notepad and remove or remark out the line that
loads Norton's SmartCan. For more information about removing
SmartCan, please order article Q102821 from the Microsoft
      Publisher FastTips Catalog.

9. Q. I imported a picture into Publisher. I don't see it on the
      screen, but it prints. Why?

   A. This problem may occur either because the resolution of the
graphic is too high to easily display on the screen, or
because the picture frame you created for it on your page
is too small. Publisher may be unable to display the
picture because of insufficient system resources. However,
in many cases the picture will print even though Publisher
      cannot display it.

To work around this problem, try creating and importing a
lower-resolution version of the graphic. If the graphic
is a scanned image, rescan it at a lower resolution or
      lower color depth.

This problem occurs most often with bitmap files
      (.BMP, .PCX, .TIF, or .PCD).
