The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 4.0 and 4.0a

SYMPTOMS
========

Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows provides the ability to create two
different types of PowerPoint OLE (object-linking-and-embedding)
objects:

   MS PowerPoint 4.0 Slide
   MS PowerPoint 4.0 Presentation

If you insert one of these objects into a slide, you can use the Play
Settings command to choose which action to take with the object
during an on-screen slide show. If you choose the Edit action, nothing
will happen when you activate that when running the on-screen slide show.

This behavior occurs for the following two reasons:

1. PowerPoint cannot be in both Slide Show mode and editing
   mode at the same time.

2. Unlike some other applications, you can't have a second instance of
   PowerPoint running at the same time, so that one instance is in Slide
   Show mode and the other is in editing mode.

WORKAROUND
==========

Show the presentation using the PowerPoint Viewer, instead of
using PowerPoint itself. Now, when you activate the objects, the Edit
action starts PowerPoint with the contents of the object open for editing.
When you close PowerPoint, you automatically return to the slide show that
is running in the PowerPoint Viewer.

MORE INFORMATION
================

This is useful for people that are delivering on-screen slide shows,
where they are teaching someone how to use PowerPoint. This way, they
don't have to keep exiting the slide show and restarting the slide show
every time they want to demonstrate a particular topic or feature.

NOTE: PowerPoint 4.0 for the Macintosh is not an OLE server. If you are
using the PowerPoint Viewer on the Macintosh to show presentations that
were created on PowerPoint for Windows, you will not be able to activate
any PowerPoint OLE objects that are in those presentations.
