The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.0c

SUMMARY
=======

If there is no POWERPNT.INI file in your Windows 3.x directory, you may get
the following message

Sorry, cannot find "POWERPNT.INI". You should run PowerPoint Setup.

when trying to do either of the following:

 - Insert a PowerPoint object into another application using the Create
From File option of the container application's Insert Object dialog
   box.

   -or-

 - Edit a PowerPoint object that has already been inserted into a
container application by double-clicking it (or otherwise
   activating the object).

This prevents PowerPoint from successfully starting as an OLE (object-
linking-and-embedding) server application. In addition, you may get other
error messages, depending on the OLE 2.0 container that you are using for
the PowerPoint object. For example, if the container is Word for Windows,
you may also get the following error messages:

The server application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make
sure that the application is properly installed, and that it has
not been deleted, moved, or renamed.

   -or-

Word cannot edit the MS PowerPoint 4.0 Slide.

   -or-

Word cannot edit the MS PowerPoint 4.0 Presentation.

WORKAROUNDS
===========

Reinstall PowerPoint and make sure that a POWERPNT.INI file has been
installed to your Windows directory before you try to insert a PowerPoint
object using the method described above.

Even without the POWERPNT.INI file, you can avoid this message by:

1. Making sure PowerPoint is already running before you insert a new
   PowerPoint object

   -or-

2. Editing an existing PowerPoint object in the container application.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in PowerPoint versions 4.0,
4.0a, and 4.0c for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post
new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes
available.
